What secrets are you keeping?
Annie Howarth is living a restless life in a restless town. It's 1984 and for a mining community in South Yorkshire, the strikes mean tensions are running high. Then a murdered girl is found on the moors and the anxiety levels are pushed to a dangerous breaking point.
Married to the Chief of Police, Annie should feel safe - William can be secretive, though surely whatever he's hiding is for her own good.
But Annie is keeping her own secrets. Ten years ago the man she loved was ripped from her life in a scandal that still haunts the both of them, and now his return will put her family, her marriage, even her life, at risk.

What I always like about Douglas' books is the sense of tension, suspense and lurking danger that she always conjures up so brilliantly, Your Beautiful Lies being no exception. This is an atmospheric book, with a strong sense of location and period, Douglas taking her time to paint a picture of the community and the social climate, which is to the book's strength; the rather bleak setting of the moors also suits the tone of the book perfectly. Similarly she draws you in slowly to Annie's small world, going into detail about her daily routines; which though initially may seem rather mundane, serves to help the reader understand Annie's frustrations with her own life, and her longing for something more. All this sets the tone well for Tom's return into Annie's life, as well as the murders; for this is a marriage and community that we know is already strained.
Annie, as the central character, I think generally manages to solicit the reader's sympathy, even if her actions can be debatable, mainly because Douglas does such a good job of depicting her isolation and loneliness. Yet at the same time, her husband William, even though he comes across as cold and distant, also evokes some sympathy; and I think it is to Douglas' credit that she was able to do this. I thought the sub-plot with Annie's family was generally well portrayed too, with Johnnie as an innocent victim of the troubles and tensions in the town; and Douglas depicted the antagonism and division between the miners and police well.
The story itself is slow to unfold, and even when events take a more sinister turn with the first murder, the pace remains pretty much the same throughout, building only towards the end. I have to say that I did have my suspicions fairly early on as to who the murderer was, and the fact that I was proven right meant I wasn't particularly surprised by the ending. That said, I did feel the ending to be rather abrupt, and whilst in some ways this did work, I didn't find myself as absorbed by those last few chapters as I would have liked to have been.
Overall an engaging read, with an intimate portrayal of a community and marriage. Douglas maintains an air of suspense and quiet menace throughout, and you always feel as though you're never fully sure who to trust, especially the male characters e.g. Tom and William; for though you do get to know them, Douglas also seems to hold something back with them. However, having read some of Douglas' other work, I can't say that this was my favourite, as it fell a little short of some of her previous books.
Well done Louise.
I love Louise Douglas and this is the only book of hers that has not appealed on every level. It lacks so many things and although I liked it, the story was slow and I did not warm to the characters at all. Its worth a read but I did not love it as I love all her others.
