I enjoyed the 1st, and was not disappointed with the 2nd. Lost in the Viking world of those whose lives were, and could only be , one of violence & brutality. Yet a world too of loyalty, friendship, and love.
So OK, a fiction, a tale to entertain and of escapism, but also grounded in the understanding and knowledge Gibbons brings of an era & a civilisation so misunderstood & misrepresented. He is to be congratulated for his historical integrity

This is an excellent read the author gets you and takes you on a rip roaring Viking saga full of great characters excellent bloody battles right from the off.The book is extremely well written and researched and I found it very difficult to put it down. I've read a lot of this type of novel and I think this is one of the best novels off Viking fiction I've read and I will definitely be reading the next instalment.

I enjoyed the book BUT almost stopped reading it a few times due to the constant repetition of the characters back stories. At first I thought it was to help those who had read the first book some time ago - but it continued throughout the book. In the end I learned to spot these chapters and skim through them (missing nothing new). Not sure if I can be bothered with the third book, as the repetitive style is sure to continue.

This second instalment is equally as good as the first. It takes place in Frankia and Ireland, with much the same characters as before. Once again there is plenty of action and good character development, and as with the the first book I could hardly put this down. I really recommend this series, and look forward with anticipation to the next book.
