At forty years of age, Mary Anne Randall still turns heads. With an abusive husband spending most of his wages on beer, she has resigned herself to be the sole breadwinner to protect her family and keep the wolves from the door.
In order to make ends meet Mary Anne runs a pawnbroking business from the wash house at the end of the garden.
Following the outbreak of war an opportunity presents itself to escape her loveless marriage and find true love.
Will she take that chance, or carry on living just for her children and not for herself?
Read the sequal A Wartime Family.

From the Publisher

Dear Readers,
Let me take you back to a time when the lives of ordinary women were changed as never before.
I used to listen with avid interest as my mother and others told me of their wartime experiences, the fear, the shortages, the blackout and the sudden changes in their lives. Factory girls, typists, debutantes and housewives left the home front and took up nursing, ambulance driving, fire watching and much more. En masse they left the home front behind and took up duties on the war front. These are the women whose stories I tell – whether they are keeping the home fires burning or serving on the war front.
Despite everything, they still found time to have fun, to love whether for the moment or such love that lasts a lifetime.
I hope you too will come with me and follow these very ordinary girls of whom much was asked and a lot given.

About the author

Lizzie Lane has written over fifty books a number of which have appeared in the top thirty best selling paperbacks and the Heatseekers charts. Her pet interest is WW2, how little people carried on regardless against the biggest upheaval the world had ever known. She mentions at one stage about how it seemed Britain was sinking beneath the weight of weaponry and allied soldiers from all over the world.
Born and raised in Bristol, a number of her family were involved in the tobacco industry which at one time employed 13,000 people in the city. This is the inspiration behind her latest series, The Tobacco Girls which is set against those five years of war and follows their lives and loves, their hope for survival and better times to come.

When you watch a film that is set during the First or Second World War, or any war that took place in the past centuries, you do NOT see explicit scenes of a sexual nature, at all! There is some indications but not the details shown explicitly. I mean, little, little details. How inappropriate that would be in any 18 rate films. No, not at all. Wartime fiction books should not have detailed sexual activities. You name it, and it’s there. Why not be brief at certain situations? Why all the details of what happens during a sexual encounter? I did not buy a book expecting to read about sex at all!!! I just wanted a relaxing wartime book, to discover how people used to live, and at the same time find out how they felt, what they did to survive. I have read a few fiction books set in the war times because I find it fascinating to see how they actually lived. But to read some disgusting passages in this book just made me feel aghast. Just because some stupid comedians swear all the time, it doesn’t mean people are going to sell more books because the books can be crude! The British Comedians who are some of the highest-grossing comedians in the world do not swear! I wonder why they are so very famous and millionaires? Well, they are intelligent and decent people. Summarizing, it’s a good story and crude also. No need to include crudeness. What a shame! It lacks skills.
I love Mary Anne's character and resilience as a mother her actions are understandable and her children are a blessing. Her husband is a brute but it highlights that there are always two sides to every story.
A WArtime Family which I had already read! And thoroughly enjoyed! If you 're a lover of ordinary people's lives during the Second World War I'm quite sure you'll enjoy this book.
