4.0 out of 5 starsIf it wasn't for the obsession with sex this would be five stars

Unnerved doesn't begin to sum up how I feel having finished this book. Also kind of needing a shower... although less so that some I have read - *cough* Gone Girl *cough*. This is one of those books that makes you doubt yourself and whether what you think you know is actually true. I found the atmosphere to be realistically creepy and the situation really felt for Lowen as she becomes steadily more paranoid, never quite sure that it isn't her mind playing tricks on her. The multi-faceted lies and manipulations are excellently shaped and laid out.

I'm not going to say that I enjoyed the diary excerpts; they are deeply, deeply disturbing. However, they felt real and whilst I certainly couldn't empathise with the person behind them, they are very good at forcing you to see through her eyes at the world. It is frightening at points and it is easy to get sucked into the fear and the disgust that Lowen is feeling. Characterisations are generally quite well done, although the gratuitous and constant sex became tedious rather quickly. I felt like I was getting to know all of the characters, with all their faults and whilst I wouldn't want to go on holiday with any of them, they definitely felt real. Each and every one of these characters is flawed and each and every one feels utterly real.

It is also a realistic glimpse at the very nature of grief and loss without ever becoming preachy, with all three adult characters grieving for someone close to them in very different ways. The concept of grieving for someone who you don't particularly like all that much is also woven into the narrative quite well, and how that gives a different but no less raw experience. I did however think more could have been done with the child; at times he seemed to be there just for the cuteness factor and his reactions and interpretations of what is going on could have been utilised to a far greater extent. I liked the kid, but that's all that I can say about him. He's in therapy, then he's not in therapy, he doesn't mention the girls and he loves his mother and he's back in therapy. There's no emotional pull with him though, it's all surface platitudes.

A full star gets knocked off however due to the constant use of sex as a blunt implement throughout this novel. It's almost every other page and it got really boring. If it's not Verity being screwed by Jeremy in her diary, it's Lowen thinking about screwing Jeremy or actually screwing Jeremy. I'm no prude and I have no issue with sexual content in books, but the over-reliance on it here really did work against it. I could see that it was part of how Hoover is building Verity's character, but it did very little for me. It's a pity because otherwise I flew through this dark and nasty book at a rate of knots, desperate to find out just what was going on and just as confused and horrified as Lowen.

I don’t know where to start with this one.it got so many rave reviews from, mainly US, readers and book clubs, I thought I’d try it myself. I’ve never read a Colleen Hoover novel so had no preconceptions but I didn’t think it was either well written or interesting. The novel is supposed to be creepy and suspenseful but it’s just a bit silly. I don’t want to give any spoilers but there were just so many parts of this novel that were completely unbelievable. When was the last time you heard someone say they ate a letter they wanted to dispose of? Seriously?

I hate romance novels as they don’t really reflect real life - they are far too convenient - woman meets handsome man, they fall in love and it’s all perfect - and they really undermine the idea that women can live happy fulfilled lives without being in a relationship at all times. Anyway, I hate romance and this is really just a romance with a slightly odd twist to it.

I’m glad it s a short book as it meant I didn’t waste more than a day on it and it’s safe to say I won’t be reading any more “CoHo” books ever again!

I wanted to be surprised by all the reviews on this book. Verity means truth.
Here comes the spoiler....
Crew is plain old creepy but always kept in the background. What would have been a nail bitten ending was if he tipped the boat. If instead of his butter knife incident, he could have blamed it on the visitor.
But no. This book is as "shocking" as the lables on orange juice are "vegetarian".
At least here in the UK they feel the need to let buyers know that in this bottle of 100% organically squeezed oranges...that there is NOT a single drop of blood. That's nice of them, if I were a moron.
Not to be so cruel to just one nation... we live in a time when the professionals feel it is necessary to print out instructions on a box of Pop-Tarts!
If you enjoy reading books, but are ironically looking up on Google the vegetarianess of a box of fruit juice- then this book might just be your cuppa!

I am a massive Colleen Hoover fan and when I heard she had written something completely different I was sceptical that she could pull it off but I take my thought back as this woman has written something that I could never imagine and it’s pure genius. I have never read a book that makes we wake up in the middle of the night to check the end of my bed but Colleen has achieved this. I read this book with anxiety, fear and pure horror at what I was reading... and when you think you have worked out the plot BAM a bend in the road appears. I have not been able to put this book down, I will say this with pure confidence this is the best book I have read if 2018! Well done Colleen hats off to you you took a gamble and it paid off... if you want a book like nothing you have read before this is the one!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this if you like twisted plots! Amazing!

No wonder this book is trending in the good reads reading charts. It is a pretty unsettling and creepy read, that quickly grabbed my attention with its story and alluring characters. I liked how Hoover didn't hold back with the story, she wrote some disturbing stuff that some other authors, I imagine, wouldn't dream to think of writing.

Ultimately, characterisation stole the show. The somewhat twisted love triangle between Lowen, Jeremy and Verity was what created suspense. I didn't even notice when I connected to the characters, because the primary objective was to get to the bottom of the mysteries. It wasn't until the end of the book, I realised I cared about Lowen and Jeremy. I wouldn't say Lowen was a really likeable narrator, but she wasn't unlikeable either. I certainly empathised with Jeremy, due to the grief and tragedies he and his family had to endure.
I like characters like Verity. They're enigmas, that every reader who enjoys such characters, wants to get to the bottom of. Hoover checked every box, as she was a deeply complicated and disturbing character, right until the last few pages.

The book's structure alternates between Lowen and Verity's perspectives. The reader is aware of Verity's perspective prior to the events of the novel, through the secret autobiography that Lowen reads. This structure definitely kept the pace of the book going, as I was engaged throughout reading it. Sometimes, from my own personal experience reading books like this, this can be a tricky thing to achieve without frustrating the reader, but Hoover pulled it off flawlessly.

As well, this book is steamy (fog up the glass steamy…). Just as the steaminess was beginning to get a little too much for my enjoyment of the story, Hoover halted it, as if she'd read my mind. In fact, Lowen herself said it. This really reinforces for me, that Hoover knew exactly what to give to the reader, and in what dosage.

I was trying to decide if I felt this story was original, because at times, I felt I was reading something very similar to some movies I've seen (not naming them, as to prevent spoilers). However, I think the ending of this book, definitely deserves Hoover's own mark. It's quite haunting, actually.

Overall, I'd say Hoover has just shown us how to write a romantic thriller and has utterly convinced me I'm to never 100% trust my future spouse. The mysteries of the story were well devised - I had to keep reading to find out all the answers to said mysteries Hoover created. My favourite thing about Verity, is how the ending isn't a fully rounded ending, as it's open to discussion and interpretation. What was the truth? What really happened? Hoover, I’m so mad and glad that the ball is in the readers court! I rated Verity 5 stars on goodreads, and read it within a day. I hope Hoover continues venturing into the thriller genre, I’d definitely pick up whatever she writes next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Thriller

I don't very often read thrillers. I guess I feel like I would spend the whole time scared that I wouldn't enjoy it but in saying that I have read a couple and found myself enjoying them. When I saw that Colleen Hoover, my all time favourite author, had written and released a thriller I knew without hesitation I was going to have to try it.

From the very start when our main character witnesses a man get hit by a car you know there is going to be something a little strange about this book. As Lowen goes to live with Jeremy and verity and be a cover writer for Verity who has been injured in an accident, she finds something Verity wrote that makes Lowen question everything that Jeremy knows about his wife and the tragic death of their twin girls. Then as Lowen notices strange things about Verity we begin to see things might be as they first appear....

To say Colleen doesn't normally write thrillers she did an awesome job at this one. I found myself hooked and completely lost in Verity. It is so well written it has you questioning everything and everyone. It's written in a way that you actually find yourself open mouthed at what you are reading and then at the end everything is flipped on it's head and you are left completely confused by what you read.

I have seen lots of people all have different opinions and conspiracy theories on this book and I love how Colleen ended it that everybody thinks differently. I have seen lots of people wanting a sequel but I am quite enjoying that it can be interpreted in so many different ways. I think it adds a real element and an extra layer to the book.

I always knew Colleen was talented but turning her hand to a completely different genre and getting it so right really lifts her even higher in my estimation and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next!!

I made a mistake when I downloaded Verity, which I won’t go into, but what a terrific mistake to make! I loved reading this book. It was a real page-turner, one which I wanted to go to bed early for so I could carry on reading.

Lowen is a struggling writer who is asked to finish a series for a highly successful author, Verity, who has been hurt in an accident. She finds herself at Verity’s home in Vermont with the nurses who care for Verity, Jeremy, her husband, and Crew, their last surviving child. The house is shrouded in tragedy and the family, loss.

As Lowen works her way through Verity’s office to get a handle on her series and looks for any hints as to where Verity might have been going with it she discovers a manuscript, an autobiography.

This read becomes a book within a book as Lowen can’t stop devouring chapter after chapter of the autobiography and as she does she discovers a side to Verity she wishes she hadn’t.

The suspense is terrific in a wonderfully creepy way and the romance built realistically. I have no hesitation in recommending this book and will definitely be reading more from this author.

This book has blown my mind! It will stay with me long after I start my next read. SO GOOD!
I’ve always enjoyed a good psychological thriller.

Lowen is a struggling to get by as an author. When she gets the offer of a life time...

She’s to take over as co writer for a famous author, Verity Crawford. To finish her best selling book series...

Not at all sure she’s made the right decision. Lowen agrees to go through Verity’s notes for her next books...

What she discovers is something so twisted, she can’t even get her mind to process it all...

Don’t want to give too much away. As this is a book you need to read and experience for yourself. It does contain some disturbing content. So not for the faint hearted.

Why hadn’t I read this earlier. Also, I’m wishing I hadn’t read it so I can read it again for the first time.

This was mind boggling to say the least. It was written so strategically I’m slightly mad at the deception.

Lowen is a complex person but one who had appeared to land on her feet. I felt her struggles and really was cheering for her when she landed being co-author as she needed a break and the money it would seem. Jeremy is a very charming man, looking after his injured wife and grieving all at the same time.

There was so much about this that I was like you wouldn’t do that and nah that doesn’t happen. But I was to captivated by the storyline and just found it so bold, creepy and gripping. I just couldn’t put it down and just never wanted it to end, I was buddy reading this and it’s fair to say we didn’t stick to the schedule.

There were a lot of twists and turns, some I guessed but that ending (chef’s kiss) was just jaw dropping.

This is now head to head one of my favourites along with It Ends With Us. Total different genres but both left an impression.

I have a number of Coleen Hoover books on my shelves and it’s definitely between Verity and All Your Perfects fighting to be my favourite so far. I can’t choose between them, because they’re two completely different styles of books, but they’re both so absolutely perfect in my eyes.

*possible spoilers for Verity*

Wellllll this book really left me SHOOK. I honestly couldn’t put it down. This book is described as a thriller but that doesn’t do this stunning book justice. It isn’t your typical thriller. The author really draws you in until you’re submerged in this deviously twisted novel so deep that you can’t escape without knowing the ending.

I loved how the chapters alternated between Lowen’s POV and chapters of Verity’s autobiography. Verity’s autobiography made me sick to my stomach at times and I truly think that’s how Hoover intended these pages to make her audience feel.

I had conflicting feelings about Lowen throughout - I hated her starting a relationship with someone who was in such a vulnerable state as it felt like she was taking advantage, but at the same time while reading Verity’s autobiography I felt like Jeremy deserved better than what he’d unknowingly been through - little did I know what was to come and how my feelings about all 3 characters would be so chaotic.

I felt like so many times throughout the book I had everything figured out (so did my boyfriend) but I had ZERO inkling of the ending we were so startlingly blessed with! Good on you Colleen Hoover for such a spectacular ending!
