Classic Jodi Picoult; lots to think about

There was plenty to think about in this book. Told in the first person from multiple points of view a chapter at a time, the story concerns a young woman who discovers the age of 32 that her father “kidnapped” her at the age of 4, changed their identities and fled to a new home in another state, telling her that her mother had died in a car crash. The book gradually explains why he did this and the reader is left to decide whether what he did was justified or not. I like this device, which the author often uses, and, as usual, we are sometimes shown the same event from more than one viewpoint. The three characters at the heart of the book all experienced issues around addiction as children, either first hand or by observing friends struggles and this influenced their actions as adults. There were some good twists, and I thought the ending left readers to decide hw the story ended. I gave the book 4 stars because the middle got a bit bogged down with some pretty gruesome scenes in prison, and a part set around an indian Reservation and customs that I was not entirely convinced added much to the storyline, but I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books that deal with tough situations and make them think “what would I have done”.

I didn’t enjoy this book but I did finish it, which says a lot. I hate the lack of flow and the individual chapters which are each from one person’s perspective. I am old and I like to read a story not bits of a story. This book is about love, but also about powerful addiction and lies. No character shines through as being without an agenda except maybe Delia who is a victim of all the bad stuff but also torn between two men, no totally honest adults here.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first part to this incredible story. I very much enjoy Jodie Picoult books. However, I found this story line went off at a completely different tangent which did not add anything to the events of the story. I persevered with the book and then I felt it was rushed through to the end. Very disappointing and I felt not up to Picoults normal outstanding research and storyline. Only my opinion.

Dislike spoilers so I can't go in-depth but you won't be disappointed! Just completed the book and will be 're reading it immediately. Just so much to take in and think about! I will admit I rushed it to find out the verdict but I am already missing the characters I have got that involved in their stories

Thankyou Jodi Picoult yet again for allowing me to step into a different life and time :)

The book ends with a trial, which is the focus of the whole narrative. I only gave it three stars because I personally find it hard to be switching from Andrew speaking, to Fitz writing the chapter to Delia putting her point of view in the next chapter. I enjoyed it, but I found it too complicated, and the questions at the end made it feel like a school study book.

I have read several of Jodie Piquolts books and always enjoyed them so I didn’t hesitate to order this one. Unfortunately I got bored half way through and the story seemed to go off track with the neighbour in the caravan park, it was totally irrelevant to the story. I personally didn’t enjoy the prison details and skipped over most of the pages.

Jodi Picoult produces another well written and well researched book. The characters are interesting and I found I genuinely wanted to know what was going on and what they were thinking.

I enjoyed the different characters having their own chapters, it carried the story forward but provided a different angle on the situation.

The story was an interesting choice. Fathers in the 70's didn't have the parental rights they do now, so it made me think "what would I do?" if I had concerns about my child and I knew no one would listen?
