Reasonably well written and yet frustrating

In many ways, I don't know where to begin with this. This novel is reasonably well written and it has a good ending and respect due to the author because satisfactory endings are difficult to write. The kindle version has some truly APPALLING errors in it - who on earth proofread this ? The one that I can easily remember is dosed instead of dozed but there were at least 6 other howlers and one sentence with a redundant "is" in it. The re-creation of things Greek was fairly well done and the story was the strongest when set in Greece. Without giving too much away, the lead female Shauna, having been in Hollywood all that time would surely have sought out some counselling to deal with that horror of a mother of hers but this is only a small criticism. One of the things I have issue with are some of the names - Roxy -really ?? Such a ridiculously cliched name and it grated on me for the first few chapters until I laid it aside. The other thing that drove me utterly bonkers was the constant carping on about designer label garments, bags etc. It goes without saying that the characters described would have Birkin bags, Chanel suits or whatever, describe the delightful shade of mint green, yes but the endless bleating about designer labels drove me nuts, and seemed to be out of sync with the more emotional aspects of the novel, if someone is just about to recognise someone meaningful from their past, who cares what flipping bag they are carrying ??? It goes without saying that A listers have this sort of stuff. I think the author does have some skill but I hope she considers her choice of names more carefully next time and decides firmly which genre she is going to enter and stays within it instead of strolling into Hello magazine every few minutes.

It annoys me that these celebs get book deals and then churn out something so trite. There are many more talented writers than Carol Kirkwood. It wasn't a terrible read but it wasn't a great one either.

I bought this because i like the author. However, i agree with others that it is a bit unbelievable in places. I was put off by the constant references to designer clothes, watches,bags etc. Also i find it hard to believe someone who is a destitute backpacker suddenly finds herself inside the Grimaldi palace meeting Princess Grace! The references to other real life celebrities also made me grit my teeth. I could not picture the lead character either, always a disappointment. I dont think i will be reading anymore of lovely Carol's books. Sorry.

What a truly beautiful book! I simply devoured it in 2 sittings! Exactly the escapism we all need right now. Carol's descriptions are so real you are transported into her world, with characters you can see, who leave an indelible mark on your heart. I absolutely loved this book and cannot recommend it highly enough. One word of warning: may cause spontaneous purchasing of flights to Greece!!
