Scarlett’s aunt was murdered in the apartment upstairs, but Scarlett is determined to continue to live below where her aunt was brutally murdered. Following her aunts death it falls on Scarlet to arrange her funeral etc and so she contacts Dee, a funeral director. Dee spends her life split between her job and organising an event to mark the disappearance of her best friend, ten years ago. On meeting Dee to arrange the funeral an unexpected link between them emerges. The two women start to uncover secrets that have long been buried but someone wants to stop them digging.
This is an excellent thriller that has introduced yet another talented author to my forever increasing list.
Lesley Kara always constructs engaging novels and this is no exception. It's a good slow burner/psychological thriller with a never a dull moment plot. The characterisation is good throughout but especially of Dee and Scarlett and I like that the author gave some focus to ME via Scarlett who has frequent struggles with its symptoms. There are interesting dynamics between Dee and her partner Lindsay who have plenty of ups and downs and the relationship between Scarlett and her father and brother undergo fascinating changes too. A particularly good inclusion is hearing Rebecca’s voice through Scarlett and I like that touch.
As we find out in this gripping page turner people lie, cheat and do stupid things that fractures friendships and raises suspicion. People do much worse and kill and there are occasions where the author creates a real sense of pervading evil. There’s plenty of tension which escalates and builds to an ending with unexpected twists and turns.
Overall, this is very easy to read, it flows well with crisply written chapters that keep you invested and reading long past bedtime!
Dee and Lindsay own Fond Farewells, a modern funeral service company.
Scarlett has recently lost her Aunt and is still trying to process her murder but knows she wants a special funeral for her.
When Scarlett meets Dee she connects with her straight away and soon it’s clear they have someone in common.
Dee and Lindsay lost a friend and it seems Scarlett’s Aunt may have known her.
This is a clever mystery thriller that definitely had me hooked.
A great book that I really enjoyed.
Thanks to Random House UK and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
If you enjoyed her previous work you will love this.
Scarlett's aunt is murdered, Dee is the funeral director, together they uncover hidden secrets.
So many twists and turns to this story.
I would advise really setting aside the time to read this book as you are really pushed to continue and i found myself up most of the night to finish it. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for an early copy.
No hesitation in leaving five star's.
