3.0 out of 5 stars Not about tacos, cats, palindromes, or skill.
By Anthony Miles on 8 April 2021
Tacocat is a character from another card game, Exploding Kittens, so I guess this is a spin-off game, wherein the manufacturers have managed to very tenuously link the fact that 'tacocat' is a palindrome to what is in fact a very basic two player card game.

The box itself opens up to reveal the playing surface itself, which is very neatly done, and within are 38 playing cards, a 'tacocat' marker, and seven blocking chips for the playing mat. The tacocat marker goes in the middle of the playing surface and each player gets seven cards. Each card has an illustrated palindrome on it, but - and this is worthy of note - these illustrations have absolutely nothing to do with the game whatsoever. The cards are numbered, and whoever has the highest card in any round moves tacocat one space on the game, and the space vacated is blocked from use. The winner is the player who gets tacocat to his side of the board first.

What it is ,then, is a game of no tactical skill whatsoever - the outcome is completely predicated on which cards the players draw initially- that could be exactly replicated in terms of gameplay with a pack of playing cards, a coin, and a pencil and paper. A game only takes about five minutes to play, too, and once you realise there's no skill involved, doesn't seem worth playing again. The self-conscious wackiness of it all initially does do a good job of covering up the paucity of play value, but children will quickly realise how little content there is here.

    5.0 out of 5 stars FUN 😸❤️
By Tim Roast on 12 April 2021
This is a fun game. My 6-year-old son in particular loves it. ❤️

Firstly I want to address the negative/less-positive reviews I've read. They say that this is not a game of skill and the winner is pre-determined by the cards they are dealt. That is good for us because it gives my son and 10-year-old daughter a better chance of winning against an adult rather than a skill-based game. And they both love it when they win.

Also reviews mentioned that the game has nothing to do with spelling and nothing to do with palindromes, at least in the gameplay. This is true, but I knew this before I got the game as it stated on the Amazon product page "this is not a spelling game". The cards do have fun palindromes on them, and nice accompanying artwork, but that is the design and has no impact on the gameplay. I knew this before, so no issue there.

Another negative review I read mentioned that the cards fray at the corners. Yes they do a bit. You need to be careful shuffling them because mine are fraying too, but not overly bad so far.

As for the game it is nicely-presented. The box is the game board which is good use of resources. The instruction sheet looks great and the cards and everything have nice art work on them. The game board works well and the slots on the game board work well too.

The game is easy to play. The foldout instruction sheet looks complicated, but luckily there is a video weblink at the top of it that points you to a nice video with the instructions, and really the game is quite simple. Also, as mentioned previously, it suits young ones as it is a game based on luck more than skill.

So overall this household is loving this game. ❤️

3.0 out of 5 stars Well made but no longevity and a little boring to play
By Justin on 6 June 2021
We already own exploding kittens and love it so when this game came along produced from the same team we were eager to give it a try. Oh, the disappointment. What is described as a game of skill is essentially a game of pure luck.

I will start by talking about the games production quality. It looks really good. The box opens out to be the play table which is clever in itself, and all the cards and other play elements are produced using good quality materials and the colour printing is fabulous. The cards themselves have some great designs on them, however it’s worth pointing out that the designs are just that, as they have nothing whatsoever to do with the actual gameplay. Rather there were some weak and tenuous links to previous games the same company have produced. That was a little disappointing.

The idea of the game is very simple and basic in that you have to move Tacocat from the centre of the board to your end. This is achieved by having the highest numbered card in your hand as opposed to your opponent having a higher numbered one. The player with the highest number moves. There is no skill whatsoever in this as the cards you are dealt or pick are completely random so it gets boring very quickly. You could essentially play this game with any deck of cards. The whole game is played through and over in about 5 minutes. My older children were very disappointed, as was I, but at least the younger ones enjoyed it. Most likely because by chance they won most of the rounds.

It’s such a shame as this game could be so much more with the addition of some tactical play elements. I doubt it will get much play in our house anymore. Well made but tedious.
