The past never stays buried for long...
Detective Chief Inspector Ryan believes he has put his turbulent history behind him. Then, in the early hours of the summer solstice, the skeleton of a young woman is found inside the Roman Wall at Sycamore Gap. She has lain undiscovered for ten years and it is Ryan's job to piece together her past.
Enquiry lines cross and merge as Ryan is forced to face his own demons and enter into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who seems unstoppable.
Murder and mystery are peppered with a sprinkling of romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit set amidst the spectacular scenery of Hadrian's Wall country in Northumberland.

About the author

LJ Ross is an international bestselling author, best known for creating atmospheric mystery and thriller novels, including the DCI Ryan series of Northumbrian murder mysteries which have sold over 7 million copies worldwide.
"Mania" (the fourth book in her Dr Gregory series) was released in March 2022 and "Bamburgh" (the nineteenth book in her DCI Ryan series) is available for ebook pre-order now!
Her debut, Holy Island, was released in January 2015 and reached number one in the Amazon UK and Australian charts. Since then, she has released a further twenty two novels, all of which have been top three global bestsellers and most of which have been UK #1 bestsellers. Louise has garnered an army of loyal readers through her storytelling and, thanks to them, most of her books reached the coveted #1 spot whilst only available to pre-order ahead of release. Her eleventh novel, "The Infirmary", is a prequel story and is also available as a major Audible Originals audio-drama starring Tom Bateman, Kevin Whately, Bertie Carvel, Hermione Norris and Alun Armstrong.
In addition to her DCI Ryan series, Louise has created a new series of thriller novels based around the central character of ‘Dr Alexander Gregory’, whose work as a psychological profiler takes him around the world. The first three books (Impostor, Hysteria and Bedlam) were #1 bestsellers and the fourth book was released in March 2022 (Mania). They were narrated in audio by the actors Hugh Dancy (Impostor & Hysteria) and Richard Armitage (Bedlam & Mania).
"The Cove" (the first book in her new Summer Suspense Mysteries series) was released in 2021. This is a new series of standalone romantic suspense novels featuring strong female protagonists.
The novels are available to purchase in e-book, paperback and audiobook formats on the Amazon store, as well as in libraries and book shops around the world.
Louise was born in Northumberland, England. She studied undergraduate and postgraduate Law at King’s College, University of London and then abroad in Paris and Florence. Sycamore Gap follows on from the first novel Holy Island, it can be read as a standalone but I feel that the reader will get so much more from it if they read Holy Island first.
It is generally accepted that authors have difficulties writing their second novel, to keep up the quality and freshness of their debut. However, I found Sycamore Gap to be better than Holy Island. I think the plot is far better and the psychology running around in the bad guy’s mind is amazing.
Many characters are carried over from Holy Island and this makes for a cosy and comfortable read. Nagging doubts are sprinkled at the reader and you wonder if some people are not as law-abiding as they first appear. Once again there is that WTF? moment as you discover the bad guy. No spoilers from me but there could also be some misdirection as one guy I suspected of being dodgy did not actually do anything out of order!
I enjoyed reading Sycamore Gap with it’s many surprises that sprung all the way to the end. I finished this book and thought “that’s clever, that character was not so dumb after all”. I was impressed with Sycamore Gap, thinking this is a GOOD 4 star read and making me want to read book 3 in this series.
This book follows on from Ryan's return to duties while on Holy Island so we are not yet familiar with his team. Anyway, a body is found at Sycamore Gap in a roman wall. It's thought to have been there about 10 years making the investigation rather tricky! As usual there is a touch of humour and romance.....
Even though I have read this tale before, I couldn't put my Kindle down. Indeed, if you liked the first book in the series, you'll enjoy this one too 👌

The back story of DCI Ryan is revealed a little more to the reader, and is fascinating and sinister. It explains a lot about him and why he is so protective of those around him that he loves. The killer is brutal but this leads us to understand more about the characters and is in no way gratuitous. If fact the first murder has you gripped in the first couple of pages. Once this has grabbed your attention you are truly absorbed into how this and subsequent murders can be solved without anyone else getting hurt along the way.
There is tension, drama and consequences, and you don't feel like this is the last time we are going to hear of The Hacker or the affects he'll have on Ryan and his team. As the plot twists and turns it leaves you no time to second guess what might be happening, all you want to do is turn the next page to find out more.
There are subtle links to Holy Island throughout the story which keeps everything gelled together.
As I said before, I love this series and I have raced through the first three books so quickly – my review of Heavenfield will follow very shortly – that I need to pace myself for books four and five. It is a strange feeling. I want to read on. I want to know what happens. But I am oh so scared of reaching the end too. They’re really that good.
