I opened the parcel and read the book immediately.
I usually let my children do that. They enjoy the excitement of a delivery - especially a delivery for them.
But this is Julia Donaldson and axel Scheffler.
I couldn’t wait to dig in.
Within pages I had a feeling the book had a important, subtle message.
One that went hand in hand with the incredible message of inclusion and diversity that is the main theme of the book. My suspicion was all but confirmed on the final page.
I absolutely loved the book. One of their best works in my opinion.
Entertaining, funny and touching. What more would we expect from the pairing?
Can’t wait to read it to the kids in the morning
The idea of fleeing home with a boyfriend and coming back with a baby is not what I’d want my son or daughter to learn as child.
The Smeds and The Smoos story and illustrations are far inferior to ‘How Butterbees came to Bee!’ which is ‘dedicated to all children of the world’ with a beautiful picture of two butterbees. The Smeds and The Smoos is dedicated to ‘all the children of Europe’ with unappealing illustrations of a monster type character and two toad like characters. The former is warm and engaging, the latter just odd.
The front cover of the book is colourful with silver foiling, however for me the characters are very unappealing and do not draw me in. I read this book once with my eldest grandchild, only the rocket and the fire from the rocket elicited a reaction, this book has not been chosen again since. The words and the illustrations do not fit. There are too many words on the page for preschool children but the illustrations are very childlike, the nonsense rhyming is difficult to understand and the message is delivered in a blunt and unimaginative manner. I am not sure how a preschool child could relate to it.
The story is weak with unappealing characters and poor rhyming. The book is good quality in terms of the thickness of the pages. However, the cover marks easily and there is no sign of FSC certification.
I was left thinking what on earth just happened…!
It arrived today and she immediately wanted to read it with me, which have now done multiple times!
It’s not as good as some of Julia Donaldson‘s earlier books but has all the classic elements - although saying that, it may grow me as the scarecrows wedding did. I wasn’t sure but that would start with either.
Obviously the partnership works well as the Illustrations really make the book and they are fantastic. It’s another rhyming book although I have to admit that some of it is a bit of a tongue twister to say. I think some of the words are made up... but it’s certainly got a great message about living peacefully with each other and it’s a great book for primary school children to simply relate the message that we should all try and get along.
