"...it was reading the Sherlock Holmes stories as a boy that first turned me on to the power of writing and storytelling." (Stephen Fry)
Ever since he made his first appearance in A Study In Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes has enthralled and delighted millions of fans throughout the world. Now Audible is proud to present Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection, read by Stephen Fry. A lifelong fan of Doyle's detective fiction, Fry has narrated the complete works of Sherlock Holmes - four novels and five collections of short stories. And, exclusively for Audible, Stephen has written and narrated nine insightful, intimate and deeply personal introductions to each title.
Stephen Fry is an English actor, screenwriter, author, playwright, journalist, comedian, television presenter, film director and all round national treasure. He is the acclaimed narrator of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter audiobooks and most recently recorded The Tales of Max Carrados for Audible Studios. Stephen has contributed columns and articles to newspapers and magazines, appears frequently on radio and has written four novels and three volumes of autobiography.

I split and concatenated each story into its own MP3 file to make playing easier. using ffmpeg a free tool. Why Audible couldn't do this is beyond me. If allowed I'll post the cue/cutting sheet.

But this version proved too tempting and I went for it. I'm glad I did, Stephen Fry does an amazing job as you'd expect but his voice, not so pure as it once was can now deliver characterisations that are lower and more gravely, perfect for the likes of Jefferson Hope or Jonathan Small. He does a great job with different characterisations and accents and even avoids that common "falsetto" trap for male narrators when attempting to provide a female characters voice.
Each novel or collection comes with a introduction written and read by Stephen and my only complaint here is that I could have stood them being longer.
If this is the last time that I buy the Holmes canon, then I'm glad it was for such a strong version.
I received this free with an Audible offer, and along with a few other books, can say I am now a happy member of the Audible family with a fully paid subscription.
I genuinely prefer reading books, but the audible versions of the books I have heard so far are wonderful, and great for carrying on in the shower, car, etc. Whispersync just works, which is immensely satisfying.
That is an observation on the Audible app rather than the narration. The narration is excellent
The author really brings these stories to life, I would recommend this to anybody
Stephen Fry. Would definitely recommend.
