Beneath a starry sky, a man and woman engage in a passionate tryst in the backyard of a home.
Once their intimacy ends, the man remains outside, enjoying the sultry, tropical night air, unaware that he is not alone.
Someone is watching him. Sneaking up behind him. Someone with a knife.
After the man is found the next morning missing his head, married journalists Vivian and Leo Bronson discover that the victim was going to expose a crooked scheme at an island electric company. The victim had plenty of diabolical coworkers, but he also had just as many jealous ex-lovers.
When a shocking confession sends the police on the chase for the suspect, Vivian and Leo follow a lead which takes them to a deadly hideaway where the killer waits, setting a trap they may not be able to escape …

More about Rachel ...
As a pre-teen, a young Rachel quickly tired of the Sweet Valley High Series and moved on to work by Sidney Sheldon, Jackie Collins and Dominick Dunne, which was just the spark necessary to fuel her love of writing.
Her first stories were written on a Brother typewriter during long summer days in Texas, where she always had an extra typewriter ribbon and correction tape handy.
Rachel later studied journalism and graduated from the University of Houston where she published articles in the Daily Cougar. She is a freelance writer and blogger with a penchant for melodrama and a frequent traveler to beach locales. Many of her stories take place on the islands, which she has visited around the world.
Rachel resides in Houston with her three sock monkeys.

This story follows the case of a rampant womaniser, who it is found out is also a whistle-blower, ends up dead at the house of his latest fling, in a very brutal manner with his head almost taken off in the attack. Viv sets up one of her junior reporters, Beanie, on the case, under her careful watch. Leo gets even more frustrated with the aspects of managing the papers and pokes his hand in where it isn’t welcome, causing problems between him and Viv.
He spends a lot of this book whining about being forced into taking over and managing his dad’s role, which makes him quite unpleasant as a character in this book. Viv spends a lot of her time building up her junior reporters, but also keeping a secret she wished she didn’t have to.
The murder case gets more involved, with them looking into links with the murder victim’s unhappy previous partners but also the secrets of his company which he was willing to divulge to others. Which caused his death is left to nearer the end of the book for you to discover, as the story takes you off on different tangents and into some dangerous places for the reporting duo.
These are easy read mysteries with nothing too complex to the read. Lots of misleading plots and twists to go along with, but a lovely island location and the laid back lifestyle. The small group of regular characters from the newspaper, lets you get to know them as you read through the series. A good look into investigative reporting and what this entails, mixed in with a mystery to be solved. A little let down with Leo’s character mood in this one, but will wait and see what the next one brings.
Anyway, if you like mysteries with a twist of romance, these books are definitely well worth reading. I'm looking forward to seeing what dreadful thing happens next on the small Palmchat Islands!
