Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

We are introduced to Sarah, a fragile woman who has lost a baby as well as having recently escaped from a controlling relationship.
In beautiful Sicily on a break with her sister, where she “felt safe… {as if she is} in a bubble.” she meets a stranger called Alexander, who is on the island for a few days with his little boy called Jamie: “{his} hand swinging like a flower in the wind beside his father’s thigh”… Jamie’s father intrigues Sarah: “The less he said, the more I wanted to know…” And, having lost her own baby, she is drawn to the child too. “The maternal urge I felt towards the little boy made me deeply uncomfortable”.
After she shares a night of passion with Alex, Sarah ends up agreeing to return to England to act as his housekeeper. Alex’s wife, Genevieve, has gone missing and the house is a mess as well as spooky. I love the way Ms Douglas builds up the ghostly tension, with metal latches tapping against chimney breasts and the old house making strange noises. And everywhere, is Genevieve’s presence: “she was there in the flickering shadows, she was in the pattern of the curtains and the weave of the rug, crouching behind the pile of books that cast strange shadows in the candlelight, I felt a draught on my face, and was convinced, for a moment, that it was Genevieve returned…”
We are never sure whether Sarah is unhinged or Alex is a murderer and this doubt is skilfully built up in the reader’s mind right through to the climax of the story. There were moments when I screamed at Sarah to get out while she could, but she wouldn’t have listened to me anyway - she was compelled to stay.
I loved the writing style: poetic, lyrical, Gothic, deeply atmospheric. The love of a child is hauntingly portrayed and I was disappointed when the book came to an end. I recommend The Secrets Between Us for a winter night when the wind is howling outside. It’s a wonderful read.
Other people have really enjoyed this book and so might you, and it is a lot of book for 99p currently. As there are many books out there to read I am not sure if I would read any other books by this author.
A beautiful equestrian star, Genevieve has gone missing following the impending break down of her marriage to Alex. Can Sarah trust Alex’s speculations as to what has happened, or should she believe the more uncomfortable rumours in the village?
An unusual mix of genre; an interesting murder-mystery with a hint of paranormal. I didn’t care much for the ghostly element – it felt displaced somehow in a novel rich in reality but other than that, this was a compelling read especially in the second half when the pace picked-up, and various characters began to show their hand. There’s also a wonderful sense of place throughout; the author being especially skilled at creating atmosphere and imagery.
