Jem Dawson defines the word temporary. A talented cameraman, he’s here today and will undoubtedly be gone tomorrow chasing adventure and danger. But, while he’s in York, he’s made it clear he wants Will, and Will can’t help liking the charming daredevil.
This inconvenient attraction results in Will accompanying Jem to the site of a notorious poltergeist outbreak. A malevolent spirit has targeted a family, and now the ghost hunting team for whom Jem does camerawork are going to be locked down in the house for three days.
The house is strange and filled with sinister and violent undercurrents. One by one, the group experiences threatening incidents, and as events escalate, Will has to ask himself if he's risking not just his heart but also his life with this impulsive gesture.
This is the first book in the Arcana Books series featuring characters from the bestselling Black and Blue series.

I often read a Lily Morton book in a single sitting but I found this a bit slow going. Sorry, I don’t mean to be critical. I’ve just tried to explain how I feel about it after finishing. The world would be a dull place indeed if we didn’t try new things and I hope Lily Morton had a lot of fun researching and writing this. She is superb at researching her subjects. I’m also sure TONS of people will love it, so my musings are probably the exception. And I’m still going to read everything she ever writes, ever. :)
This was a really fun and gripping read, with characters that had excellent chemistry, and some tense moments that really kept me on edge!
A spin-off from the Black and Blue series, that also works as a standalone, this book covers the development of a relationship between Will and Jem, two men both more accustomed to moving on than settling down, whilst also solving the ghostly mystery in a family's home.
I really liked the relationship dynamics, especially the way in which their mutual attraction was made very clear to both of them from the off, but they managed to maintain the tension and buildup.
The ghostly parts had some genuine tension, where I found myself shouting at the characters to get out!
My only real quibble was that there were a few elements where I had to work hard to ignore somethings that seemed incongruous to me (why Will was so resistant to recognise obvious ghostly signs to himself or Jem when he has such experience with ghosts bewildered me, and there were moments when Jem explained something to Will in one chapter but two chapters layer had the exact phenomenon explained *to* him by Will).
Overall an excellent story, and with hints about future stories...
Now onto the storyline. It was unpredictable and did not go down the avenue I expected at all! It was also pretty scary and I regretted binge reading it in one night when I was away from home - there was a lot of peering into the corner of the hotel room and imaging flickering lights........ But it is a definite keeper and re-read book. I'm off to order my hardcopy (a rare occurrencere, only awarded to the books I would regret losing if the world lost the function to buy electronic versions).
This is a great start to a new series and I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next!
