Update: 17/02/19 - My replacement USB stick that Sandisk sent me has also failed with the same problem after 3 months (Do not buy this piece of junk)
There is a very narrow slot that enables you to put it on a keyring - which is what I wanted to do so I always have it with me and don't need to go looking for it in a bag etc. However, this part is plastic and I don't know yet (only been using it a few days) how robust that will be when in a pocket and the device gets a bit of rough handling - there is zero movement in the slot now it's on the keyring (it's pressing against the metal of the ring so need to be gentle in folding the keys away to insert it in the laptop socket) so I could see it snapping which would be a bad thing for ensuring it stays safe and then it would make it harder to keep handy all the time on travels. since the device itself is so small, keeping track of where it is in pockets or bags will be harder. But for now it's on the keyring and I highlight a potential problem, not at present an actual one. If I bought again I might prefer to go for a longer unit, but then one gets the problem of another bulkier thing to have on a keyring. Pros and cons of first world problems, eh? :-)
The preloaded software for creating a SecureVault for files stored on the drive is easy to use, if you want or need to use it. Enables a robust password that protects access to files you store there. If you want to delete this feature it's also easy. I removed it to begin with as I needed to update Navigation software in my car and the vehicle seemed to have difficulty finding the files if not in the root directory, so I took off all the pre-loaded files, did the nav software update and then reinstalled the SanDisk stuff. All easy. No other spamware, trial software or other stuff included (which isn't the case with some removable drives. So good for SanDisk there).
So think about what you need in a portable drive - performance is great. Is the hardware right for your purpose? For me, a better keyring hook, probably metal, would make it perfect.
1. Impossible to open the packaging without using scissors.
2. The USB drive does not seem to fit into the USB port of my Surface Pro (2017). Since I obviously don't want to force it, that's not a good start.
3. I've tested the USB drive just now with H2Testw, which I use regularly and which I think is trustworthy.
[Drive write speed approx 19 MB/sec.] It wrote about 30 MB, then gave me an error message and refused to write any further. I note that the same result might happen if I had been sold a 32 MB drive hacked to pretend that it's a 128 MB drive: I'm not saying that this is the case, since the product came from Amazon itself, but I'm left uncomfortable...
4. I'm giving it a second chance right now, but I'm not confident. I'll update this report and if necessary re-rate the product based on the second test.
No problem if you leave it permanently in a machine, but if you're regularly unplugging the device I'd suggest going for the older version.
But boy oh boy does it run hot. And that translates to severely diminished speeds when writing data to it. Read speed is unaffected (consistently around 130MB/sec even when roasting). From cold, writing the first 2GB or so of data to the drive will be done at speeds of around 55MB/sec. After that, you'll see a marked drop off as thermal throttling kicks in - speeds drop to anywhere from 3MB/s to 20MB/s. You can see this in the pictures attached.
If you're using it as a write once and forget about it type device (e.g. music in a car), this is perfectly ok. If you're going to regularly change the content on it (media stick for a TV, transferring files), I'd recommend something else. It's likely that sustained exposure to that kind of temperature will kill the drive within months.
Pros:
+ size and convenience
+ good read speed
Cons:
- write performance
- temperature

Case now of just seeing how reliability it is.

Case now of just seeing how reliability it is.

It was simple to store the required data on this stick, it wrote quickly enough (I'm not using the USB 3.1 features as it's in a 2.0 socket) and being USB it's easy to back up. I briefly tested it in a USB 3.0 socket and it was fast, over 150Mb/s if I recall (copying from an SSD card) but the manufacturer doesn't state the write speed - bizarre!
I found it value for money too - with space to store more stuff on here than on the old 16Gb SD card.
