#1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense Dean Koontz takes a surprising and exhilarating road trip with a man in pursuit of his strange past—mile by frightening mile.
Quinn Quicksilver was born a mystery—abandoned at three days old on a desert highway in Arizona. Raised in an orphanage, never knowing his parents, Quinn had a happy if unexceptional life. Until the day of “strange magnetism.” It compelled him to drive out to the middle of nowhere. It helped him find a coin worth a lot of money. And it practically saved his life when two government agents showed up in the diner in pursuit of him. Now Quinn is on the run from those agents and who knows what else, fleeing for his life.
During a shoot-out at a forlorn dude ranch, he finally meets his destined companions: Bridget Rainking, a beauty as gifted in foresight as she is with firearms, and her grandpa Sparky, a romance novelist with an unusual past. Bridget knows what it’s like to be Quinn. She’s hunted, too. The only way to stay alive is to keep moving.
Barreling through the Sonoran Desert, the formidable trio is impelled by that same inexplicable magnetism toward the inevitable. With every deeply disturbing mile, something sinister is in the rearview—an enemy that is more than a match for Quinn. Even as he discovers within himself resources that are every bit as scary.

Features Quinn Quicksilver, a baby abandoned at three days old on a desert highway in Arizona.
His back story is quickly established followed by fast paced action.
Features current issues such as at home DNA testing, cults, trafficking etc.
As with many Koontz novels, features a dog as a character.
Some times Koontz can introduce secondary characters/story arcs that do not greatly add to the novel. Not this time, the story stays fast paced and direct. Most of the time.
Some may think the ending is rushed.
Features a strong and interesting lead character in Quinn.
In terms of other Koontz books.
Would recommend the Nameless and Odd Thomas series of books.
Nameless are short novellas around 50 pages long. Start with In the Heart of the Fire.
Thoroughly enjoyed the novels Mr. Murder and the recent The Other Emily.
Likewise the older classics, Lightning, Watchers, Phantoms etc.
Other similar authors you might consider Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Michael Crichton.
Quinn is found as a baby, abandoned in the middle of nowhere. He’s taken to an orphanage run by nuns. It’s not until an odd, scary event that he begins to follow psychic magnetism.
The story is about good versus evil, and how those in power are corrupt and the world becoming worse – but there is far more to it than that. Can Quinn uncover his roots?
One of the reasons I love this author’s work so much is because he challenges those in authority and understands how ‘wicked’ the world has become. I don’t give spoilers so I can’t say too much about the evil that surrounds Quinn and his ‘band’ – not complete without a dog; wonderful Winston.
Overall, this was a fabulous yet troubling story, with a thread of humour that balances the evil therein.
Highly recommended.
A horrible, turgid mess of a novel with no sense of drama because every situation is quickly solved by another ridiculous coincidence usually as a character discovers another power that just happens to be exactly what they need at that moment.
With a plethora of stupid characters who all talk in pithy nonsense, none of whom the reader can engage with and a narrative that is all over the place, this is an utter chore to read.
Still, at least he cares about the planet as he once again recycles old plots that he's done far better in other books.
Avoid at all costs.
It is really a teen novel with teen heroes and should be marketed as such.
"Righteous killing" is glorified here. Immoral and hateful.
I could not finish it, which is a thing I very rarely do.
