*******************************
Who was Queen Victoria?
A little old lady, potato-like in appearance, dressed in everlasting black? She was also a passionate young princess who loved dancing. And there is also a third Victoria, the brilliant queen, one who invented a new role for the monarchy.
Victoria found a way of ruling when people were deeply uncomfortable with having a woman on the throne.
Her image as a conventional daughter, wife and widow concealed the reality of a talented, instinctive politician. Her actions, if not her words, reveal that she was tearing up the rules on how to be female. But the price of this was deep personal pain.
By looking in detail at twenty-four days of her life, through diaries, letters and more, we meet Queen Victoria up-close and personal. Living with her from hour to hour, we can see and celebrate the contradictions that make up British history's most recognisable woman.

Review
A wonderfully fresh, vivid and engaging portrait of Victoria. (Jane Ridley, author of Bertie: A Life of Edward VII)
The glory of this book is in the details, and the specific moments, that Worsley chooses to single out for mention, and in her cheerful voice as she leads us by the hand to the next window of Victoria's life calendar. (The Times)
Queen Victoria has much of the abundant charm of its author (A.N. Wilson Spectator)
The latest from historian Worsley is an insightful, sympathetic, and vividly written examination of the "good woman" who ruled England for 64 years... Worsley's command of the material and elegant writing style make this a must-read for anyone interested in the British monarchy. (Publisher's Weekly)
Praise for Jane Austen at Home:
This is my kind of history: carefully researched but so vivid that you are convinced Lucy Worsley was actually there at the party - or the parsonage. (Antonia Fraser)
Jane Austen at Home offers a fascinating look at Jane Austen's world through the lens of the homes in which she lived and worked throughout her life. The result is a refreshingly unique perspective on Austen and her work and a beautifully nuanced exploration of gender, creativity, and domesticity. (Amanda Foreman)
A vivid portrait of Jane Austen. A must for any Austenite. (Red Magazine)
Brilliant and very moving, this book is a fascinating and original exploration of Jane Austen with lots of new material - Worsley brings Austen to life superbly, through her pages she is a flesh and blood woman, intelligent, powerful, contradictory, loving, loved. A magnificent book. (Kate Williams)
Rarely, if ever, will you encounter a historian so in command of their material. Truly, this is a dazzling exercise in persuasion, written with sense and sensibility. (Saturday Express)
A deep, prolifically researched dive into the houses, vacation homes, and schools where the author spent her life. (Vogue Magazine)
Worsley offers us much that Austen's admirers wish to know... [she] is entirely convincing. (New York Times)
An interesting portrait of Georgian and Regency material culture. There's much intriguing historical detail. (Literary Review)
A sprightly new take on Austen's life. (Mail on Sunday) --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Lucy Worsely proved me wrong. Her way of portraying Victoria throughout her life by focusing on 24 key events in her life gave me a whole new human perspective of this very well known person who has had so much coverage.
Lucy Worsley is a very clever writer, who successfully has created an account of Victoria's life which is refreshing, factual, yet not with emotional debate to question her choices, and give the reader some new things to think about when considering this iconic queen.
Thank you very much indeed.

The writing style of this book makes it a very read. I never felt bogged down by any of the information in the book, when things needed to be explained. The chapter are reasonably short, reading time on my Kindle was 20-40 minutes per chapter.
I enjoyed this book, although I already knew quite a bit about Victoria, I still found this an interesting read. I found out a few things i didn't know and learnt about others in more detail. We also got a very intimate look at Victoria and her day to day life, which was fascinating.
I find this book to be no different, I've read several chapters already and can't wait to read more. She delves deep into Queen Victoria's life in an honest and objective way, while adding a character and personality to the monarch that some of us weren't taught in school - she was certainly so much more than a perpetual widow in black as the usual illustrations and photos show.
The hardback edition is beautiful and very high quality. It surprised me how thick the book is as well, I expected a fairly small volume but it was about three times the size I expected, amazing value for this price and quality of book and content. I'm looking forward to completing it over the next few weeks!
I've ready many books on Victoria and this one didn't disappoint. I enjoyed Lucy Worsley's style of writing and her way of telling the story in a modern way but with an appreciation of the past .
NB: I noticed the cover design has changed for the paperback.
Like many people I love history but never really read up about her as from young life we are taught shes an old looking dumpy lady in black and she really loved Albert and tehy had the best love, and they bought about a golden age.
I was almost dissapointed once I read it, the woman was completely different, the 'great love' in modern day terms would be classed as controlling and Albert seems like a really unlikable person.
I definately recomend reading this as it is a huge eye opener and really shows how she shaped the modern monarchy that do not interfere with parliament etc
