Learn how to make better financial decisions by understanding how the world of money really works.
A four-time bestselling author and presenter of a Top 5 UK business podcast, Rob Dix takes his talent for making complex topics simple and fun and applies it to one of the most profitable subjects you can understand…
For hundreds of years, working hard and saving up diligently would have set you up for financial security and a comfortable retirement.
Not anymore. For the last 50 years we’ve been living in a whole new financial world – one that’s seeing your savings lose value faster than you can build them, asset prices boom out of reach, and most people slipping backwards however hard they try.
The Price Of Money explains, in a straightforward and entertaining way, what’s changed… and what you should do now we’re here.
You’ll learn why the pound has lost 99% of its value, and how to use future declines to your advantage. You’ll understand how the government produced £445bn out of thin air in response to Covid, and which investments will benefit most as a result. Most importantly, you’ll be shown what’s coming next – and how to position yourself to gain rather than suffer.
You don’t need even the slightest knowledge of economics to read this book – just a desire to understand why the world of money is working against you, and what to do about it.
Reactions from pre-release readers:
“I found it fascinating and weirdly compulsive reading – I read it faster than some novels!”
“Conversational and accessible, with some brilliant explanations making complex concepts understandable.”
“I was shocked by how little I knew.”
“Why as a fully fledged adult did I not know all this stuff before?”
“So accessible, down to earth (funny in places!) and a real page turner – not something you'd expect from a book about money.”

I hate to sound cheesy and say ‘I couldn’t put it down’ but Rob has written this book in such a way that each of his concepts and ideas leaves you wanting to know more. I ended up reading this book, over two days. He’s made even the most dullest parts of the finical system interesting and easy to understand. I generally do feel like I know more about how money works and, better still, how I can make it work for me.
It’s really well linked to ‘the property podcast’ which is another resource I have found really valuable. I can’t believe how much I am enjoying learning about investments, and it’s costing me next to nothing!
So much information about the "Principles of Money", it's early origin, how the Dollar moved from Gold based system to Fiat currency and the implications of it.. This book has given me a better understanding of "Money and it's usage" in the modern world applies..
Great book with useful examples and charts.. Hats off for this try, Rob Dix... I'll recommend highly this to my friends to have a better understanding of the Money system
Rob states many times that a more in depth description or analysis could have been made in certain areas, but for the purpose of this book (which is understanding the financial and economic system we find ourselves in today) that would not be beneficial.
While I broadly understood most of the concepts in this book beforehand I didn't fully appreciate the magnitude of many of them. The graphs helped to explain this very clearly and when for example you look at the purchasing power of gold vs the pound over the past 100 years it is very easy to see which has been the superior store of wealth. The insidious nature of inflation is such that we don't normally notice it year by year although now it is blazened over the news on a daily basis, it suddenly becomes clearer that we've all been gradually robbed during our lives. It's just that now we're being robbed far more quickly!
I now understand how the central bank and commercial banks act together to implement policies such as QE which always seemed like a bit of a dark art previously. I must admit it does take some getting your head round, but as the book isn't too long - I will read it again to further cement my understanding.
All in all a great read as Rob's previous books have also been. It is written in a style which makes some fairly complex concepts far easier to absorb than any economist could ever do, in a language which is easy to understand when coupled with real life examples.
I agree with Rob that inflation is set to be considerably higher than most of us have ever been used to for a good while to come, while interest rates will struggle to reach levels seen in the 70's 80's or even the 90's due to reasoning clearly explained in the book. For this reason alone you should buy this book to further understand the economic landscape we are currently presented with and seems likely to continue for some time to come. Then at least you will stand a chance of actually prospering from the situation instead of being punished. The news headlines may seem scary (which they are intended to be) but sticking your head in the sand is not a viable option if you want to navigate the choppy waters we are currently faced with.
It seems an incredible amount of research has been undertaken, given all the Sources notes at the end of the book, and that information has been skilfully condensed and arranged into this well crafted and fascinating book. Better still, the writing style flows easily and there’s real warmth and humour coming through too.
I’ve learnt a huge amount, and this book has changed my thinking on money, saving and investing. Congratulations on a brilliant piece of work.
On the podcast, Rob said something like, "We use the pound as a ruler to measure the price of everything, but the problem is the length of the ruler keeps changing". What a brilliant illustration of how to understand inflation.
Rob's genius lies in taking topics like economics that are dull and complex, adding a sprinkling of wit and boiling it down so anyone can understand it. I now have a much clearer idea of how inflation, QE and the banking system work. Thank you for writing such a concise compendium.
Like it or not, money affects us all, so it pays to understand how it works. And, if you want to invest wisely and grow your wealth in a low-interest, high-inflationary environment, this is essential reading.
