Two broke young backpackers are grateful to find fruitpicking work at a farm, but something seems very strange about the owner and his workers.
Backpackers Gemma and Hayley hitchhike for days to make it to the remote Llewellyn Farm. The owner, Tate Llewellyn, welcomes them in. Kind and charismatic, Tate seems to spend most of his time cultivating rare orchids in his greenhouse.
The weeks go on, a blur of fruit-picking, parties, campfires and wading beneath waterfalls in the nearby hot springs. Tate calls the girls his orchids...his pretty orchids...
Until the night the girls find themselves on a dark highway, bruised and bloodied.
How did everything go so wrong?
Senior Detective Bronwen McKay and psychologist Megan Arlotti question the terrified girls. But Hayley and Gemma are telling two very different stories of what happened to them over the past three months.
Which story is the truth and what are the girls afraid to tell?

I was not disappointed, the plot was unusual and well written - I tried guessing what was going to happen next, but the intrigue just kept me guessing.
I think it was a little darker then Anni's previous stories, not in a 'blood and guts' way, but in a psychological way.
I loved every word of it - I tried not to read it too fast so I could enjoy it for longer!
The girls themselves were annoying me. Both told different stories of the preceding three months so one was lying, and one was saying how hot it had been one minute, then that she'd been freezing. Then, in her next interview she says she has no memory but then goes on to describe a barn and its padlock, etc.....which made it all pretty irritating reading for me. Then we hear that Tate, the young millionaire wanted to make the world a better place......so he grows orchids.....hmmmm.......I'd seen enough by then. It just didn't ring true for me.
The forensic bods had been through the suspect's house yet hadn't removed a dubious video from a machine, either, so that was something else I didn't believe would happen.
I was pleased Joe bothered about the birds in the aviary as nobody else seemed concerned.
I didn't happen upon any spelling mistakes which was good but think I'll pass on her books in future. They always sound interesting, but I think are more for young adults.
I like the idea of laboratory experiments because truly the r don’t know if science could actually do this. We’ve come a long way since the Victorian times and the idea of what happens in this book could easily be something quite easy to achieve. I liked the lies and the secrets. The idea that the mind is fragile and can be easily warped and memories altered. That we can convince ourselves that something didn’t happen and convince ourselves something else happened instead. Which again links back to, just exactly what is a human being and science truly capable of if given the chance?
