'Truly a marvellous collection ... There is balm for the soul, fire for the belly, a cooling compress for the fevered brow, solace for the wounded, an arm around the lonely shoulder - the whole collection is a matchless compound of hug, tonic and kiss' Stephen Fry
Sometimes only a poem will do. These poetic prescriptions and wise words of advice offer comfort, delight and inspiration for all; a space for reflection, and that precious realization - I'm not the only one who feels like this.
In the years since he first had the idea of prescribing short, powerful poems for all manner of spiritual ailments, William Sieghart has taken his Poetry Pharmacy around the length and breadth of Britain, into the pages of the Guardian, onto BBC Radio 4 and onto the television, honing his prescriptions all the time. This pocket-sized book presents the most essential poems in his dispensary: those which, again and again, have really shown themselves to work. Whether you are suffering from loneliness, lack of courage, heartbreak, hopelessness, or even from an excess of ego, there is something here to ease your pain.
'The book is delightful; it rightly resituates poetry in relation to its biggest and most serious task: helping us to live and die well' Alain de Botton

Set out into sections such as Mental and Emotional Wellbeing, Motivations, Self-Image and Self-Acceptance, The World and Other People, and Love and Loss, so each section has poems for the different elements that make up these main groupings. Of course, with something like this you will know some of these poems, after all we all know Rudyard Kipling’s ‘If…’, but there are many others that you will be unlikely to know.
There is a piece about how the poetry pharmacy came about as well as a piece on how to read poetry, which should help those new to this wonderful world. I always tell people when reading poems to let the vision created by the lyrics and the feelings it evokes be what they should take away from it, and of course as Seighart mentions, the same poem read at different times can evoke something slightly different, depending on how you are feeling in yourself at the time.
If you are looking for something that will help you make sense of what you are suffering, then hopefully you should find it within these pages, and thus find some consolation or inspiration. At times there can be a sort of prejudice around reading poetry, but ignore this, those who try to cast aspersions are quite often people who may be able to read the words on a page but will never really understand them. One other thing I should mention is that although there are complete poems here, some pieces are only extracts.
Lovely, thought provoking poems with excellent introductions which help me to understand them better.
A good introduction to learning to enjoy poetry more and to help you thorough those difficult time.
I would recommend you read the preface to get the most from this book.
Great choice of poetry and really deep commentary. Each poem has a page of helpful thoughts from the author about a particular situation or problem : not at all like the usual cheap and cheerful self help books. You won't regret buying this and it won't break the bank.
