How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot as good as the original
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 February 2022
Recommendation: buy the PS4 version and play that on the PS5. It's the same game but cheaper, and even then wait for the price to come down.

Review.
This isn't as good as the original. I'm about 10 hours in. I've got past the must do activities and now I'm in the Forbidden West proper. And somehow I don't really care. The graphics are probably better than on the PS4 but not in any meaningful way. There's more detail and more leaves, dust and bugs in the air but nothing that adds to the game play. The cut scenes - of which there are many and they are often long - are beautiful but so what? I don't buy games to watch very high quality mini-films. The game play feels clunky and a bit awkward. Compared to AC Valhalla it feels very dated. The hand-to-hand combat in particular feels weird. During one must-win-to-progress fight the 'champion' eventually just stood still while I beat him up! And it's buggy. I've been stuck in the undergrowth twice. Machines have been able to put their heads through 'solid' objects. I don't remember any of these problems with the original - which I played through twice. Finally there's no build in the 'plot', it just doesn't pull you in to the game.

And one final thing ... when are we going to get a true PS5 game, not just a PS4 game with updated graphics? Yes the PS5 is bigger, faster and so on, but at the moment it just feels like a supped-up PS4.

Overall I would recommend waiting for the price to drop - a lot. Definitely not worth £70 or anything close.

xxxx

Update: lost 10 levels due to a save fail. Really weird because it took me back a couple of days, not to the last session, and not to the last quick save. Known bug? I've stopped playing the game.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tedious, Irritating waste of money
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 February 2022
Edition: PS5Verified Purchase
They seem to have spent all their time developing a stunning map and had forgotten about the gameplay until they'd run out of money. Really disappointed in the poor gameplay and irritating quirks of the controls.

- For example, in a boss battle by the time you've scanned the boss machine, found it's weakness and if it has a chain reaction you've lost, most of your health.
- You can not dodge many incoming attacks/missiles as the dodge doesn't work most of the time due to the huge splash radius of enemy weapons and the speed in which they can move relative to your movements.
- Their projectiles can track you as you move so again you can not dodge them whereas your arrows/spears etc track in a straight line.
- When being attacked but multiple enemies each one will shoot/hit/roll over you and you fall to the ground groaning unable to do anything, this continually happens until you die. You are unable to perform any counter manoeuvre or dodge. Annoying.
- Sometimes Aloy (your character) can climb with ease but then will fail to make a simple jump or will remain stationary regardless of how many times you push the jump button.
- A lot of the puzzles are tedious and boring, they're more a search for the obscure thing you have to do in order to complete something that should be simple. Like having to push a tree over in order to complete a mission but the tree is nowhere near your final objective. It's just tedious.

Being a fan of Horizon - New Dawn this one version been a big disappointment . As I said at the start, great scenery but rubbish game. If you're thinking about getting it don't pay the price now £69.99 but wait until it's on sale for about £20. Then you won't be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visually stunning and incredibly engaging
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 February 2022
Edition: PS5Verified Purchase
So far I am finding this game to be incredible, I'm about 10 hours in and can already tell that I will sink well over 100 hours into this game, maybe nearer to 150, and that'll likely be on just1 play-through. It looks incredible, the scenery is captivating, colours are powerful and vibrant, the atmosphere is so alive and the environment just really pulls you into a beautiful rendition of a post-apocalyptic, over-grown world. The story leads on immediately from Zero Dawn in a great way, and I am looking forward to seeing what the story will uncover next! There looks to be an abundance of side-quests and other missions/tasks, as well as customisations and options for multiple styles of play!
Definitely worth a pickup for any RPG fan, but especially for fans of the first game!

There's no point reviewing Amazon's delivery service, the high winds in the South of the UK meant that all shipments for 18th Feb were delayed, so I did received this game on the 19th, despite the tracking not working. For obvious reasons, I will forgive Amazon completely for this as they have no control over the weather, and I am very grateful I managed to receive the game on the following day despite there still being fairly high winds all weekend.

2.0 out of 5 stars In the Same Vein as Far Cry 6 or Dying Light 2 or...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 April 2022
Edition: PS5Verified Purchase
This game is in the same vein as most open world games are anymore and it's equally as disappointing to me as Far Cry 6 and Dying Light 2 were.

You've got a jarringly convoluted story full of characters and what are meant to be close companions that you don't care about at all and they all have nearly unlimited amounts of dialogue that you couldn't care less about.

There are endless tedious side jaunts to undertake and the reward for the effort is comically disappointing. For example you spend hours grinding puzzle ruins without knowing what the rewards will unlock only to discover later in the game you wasted all of that time just to get some sparkly animations based on holidays in an area you'll hardly ever visit.

There are a few quests like this that you could spend hundreds of hours on but I don't know how anyone could manage such a boring thing.

The gameplay is not very good and often times your character will get stuck in environments. The controls feel clunky and Aloy moves about like a drunken moose it feels like at times.

This game is like so many other open world games are anymore. Just big empty hollow world's with massively tedious grinds of boring side jaunts.

The voice acting and writing seems like it was made by 12-13 year olds who speak English as a second language.

The level of quality in games has gone down massively in the last couple of years and it's unfortunate a game as clunky and unpolished as this game is getting so many sales and such high reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted in every single way
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 February 2022

I have recently just finished platinum’ing this game and I have to say, I enjoyed every moment.

Open world fatigue is a really big problem these days, but Horizon suffers none of this, as it constantly delivers interesting and new ways to present content, that feels fulfilling, and not lifeless like a lot of the competition.

There are times playing this game where I just stopped adventuring and took in the scenery, this game is seriously beautiful.

If you like Horizon: Xero Dawn, you’ll love this. An improvement in every way. Get it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't work!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 February 2022

This is the first time this has ever happened to me in over 30 years of gaming where a game just doesn't load. The disc just doesn't read.
It's not my PS5 as it reads other PS5, PS4 and Blu-ray discs fine.
Very disappointed... Contacted Sony and given them the SKU. It's going back to Amazon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crashed & shuts down PS5 7 times
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 February 2022
Edition: PS5Verified Purchase
I would LOVE to be able to play this game but within an hour of playing the game causes my console to power off completely & won’t turn back on unless I remove and plug in the power cord again. Sony sent me to Guerrilla for help who refuse to acknowledge this issue. I’m not the only gamer this is happening to but it’s a minority of us. This ONLY happens with this game. The day 1 update and then the recent patch did not fix this issue. I will not risk bricking my console which has to repair the database every time the game crashes. This is a big problem & I hope it will be addressed one day. I am sending this game back & getting a refund. I’ll buy it again later on down the road if GUERILLA finally start to care.

Rhino20-ten
1.0 out of 5 stars Totally muddled and soul-less
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 April 2022
Edition: PS5Verified Purchase
Let me start by saying I found the first game utterly brilliant, a combination of a wonderful story with engrossing, agile and fun gameplay. The deeper you got into the game the more you cared about trying the finish the story, to answer all the 'why' and how' questions in your head. The skill progression and strength of your enemies was beautifully judged. My only criticism was the constant swapping of weapons and particularly outfits in the middle of a battle, it ruined the immersion a bit.

Now onto forbidden West a travesty of a follow up that ignores what made the first game great and amplifies its weak points. Graphics great yes, but thats pretty much it. Combat, is now utterly awkward and as fluid as a sun hardened tvrd. The add-on of even more damage types is ridiculous, by the time you scan an enemy to see what its weakness is and which one of the 28 weapons you've got is best, you've already had most of your health wiped out. The scanning mechanics are poor btw. The addition of a 'valour surge' is awful. A terrible mechanic, It adds even more pauses into the game - go to the skill tree activate the valour surge you need for this fight, ruining immersion. Then the animation Aloy putting war markings on etc for the valour sure, utterly stupid, ruining any 'realism' of combat. The skill trees are also really poorly done. Climbing is just stupid now. The fact that you have to now do the hunting grounds to collect medals to buy weapons really annoys me, these are awful grinding sub quests are now made to be compulsory (optional in the first game) to get the weapons you need. Utterly joyless awful quest these are. Machines: why so many new ones, how on earth does that work with the world that was built in the first game? They've just shoehorned new machine and damage types in without any thought to consistency with the first game. How come no watchers? How does that work with the whole mythology built up from the first game?

Lastly the Story. Well there isn't one really, an awful cash grab of a game, when the first one had such a strong and and amazing story that took you on an emotional journey, this one show about as much emotion as a 40 year old pumped full of botox. The makers of this game should be utterly ashamed of themselves and how they have tarnished the reputation of Guerrilla games and of this franchise. Great games are like works of art, this is is like a messy stinking cow pat.
