Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg returns to the enchanting world of The Paper Magician.
Alvie Brechenmacher has arrived in London to begin her training in Polymaking—the magical discipline of bespelling plastic. Polymaking is the newest form of magic, and in a field where there is so much left to learn, every Polymaker dreams of making the next big discovery.
Even though she is only an apprentice, Alvie is an inventor at heart, and she is determined to make as many discoveries—in as short a time frame—as she can. Luckily for her, she’s studying under the world-renowned magician Marion Praff, who is just as dedicated as Alvie is.
Alvie’s enthusiasm reinvigorates her mentor’s work, and together they create a device that could forever change Polymaking—and the world. But when a rival learns of their plans, he conspires to steal their invention and take the credit for it himself.
To thwart him, Alvie will need to think one step ahead. For in the high-stakes world of magical discovery, not everyone plays fair…

Review
“The everyday setting with just a touch of magical steampunk technology proves to readers what an incredible job Holmberg does with her world-building. Fans of previous Paper Magician books will love this addition to the world, and readers new to it will quickly fall in love with the magic-wielding characters.” —Booklist
“Jane Austen meets Nicola Tesla meets Gail Carriger at her whimsiest and it is thoroughly—thoroughly—delightful. The Plastic Magician is a tonic for all that is weighing upon your readerly heart and soul. Take a seat and fall deep into this world; you won’t regret it.” —LOCUS Magazine

I put this down to the enthusiasm of the author to tell her story, and her unfamiliarity with English colloquisms, and England.
There is a set up at the end for further books involving the same characters. Perhaps the employment of a different proof reader would help with the flow of the text?
Eventhough it is a fantasy, it is set in a real place, at a certain time in history.
I liked the idea of using plastics to meet a medical problem and I liked the way the Magician and his apprentice work all the hours God sends because they are committed to their project.
On the downside, I gather the story is set in the early 1900s but it didn't feel right - or did American women wear trousers as a normal style that long ago? The author doesn't convey the attitude of English servants very well or the life style of the wealthy. I think an apprentice would have had a similar place to a Governess, not a servant and equally not a lady. It would have been unthinkable for her to miss meals and nor would she have had her own maid.
Although the apprentice is an American, some of the Americanisms like buggy and veteran are used by English characters and jarred. The other thing I disliked was the way the Apprentice kept falling over.
When Alvie arrives in London she gets lost on her train journey and a young man comes to her aid. They have an instant attraction but she doesn’t know if she will ever see him again. Magician Praff welcomes her into his home and with Alvie's interest and enthusiasm for Polymaking she rejuvenates his connection to his work. Alvie is sent to help in a hospital as part of her studies. She befriends an amputee patient whose brother turns out to be the man from the train station. This new friendship gives her the idea to use Polymaking magic to form realistic prosthetics. Together with Praff, the pair come up with new spells to create a fantastic and ingenious new prosthetic invention. But a rival Polymaker of Praff discovers their plans and makes repeated attempts to steal their ideas and take the credit for the wondrous new application for plastic for himself.
When a final attack comes that threatens their lives, Alvie must push herself to her limits and use all her natural abilities to thwart their nemesis to secure their creation while saving their lives in the process.
🌟🌟🌟🌟. I loved The Paper Magician series and was delighted to read this spin-off story. I liked Alvie straight away as she was determined, impressive and naturally gifted in her magical abilities while having a caring heart. The Plastic magic was interesting as it created plenty of new spells and incredible applications for it. I didn’t find the story as gripping as the original series but overall I loved being back in this world and hope there will be more adventures for Alvie to come.
