Will Buckingham is a writer, academic and traveller with an MA in Anthropology and a PhD in Philosophy. He has published books in several genres, including philosophy and fiction for children and adults. His latest book is "Hello, Stranger: How We Find Connection in a Disconnected World" (Granta 2021).

Born in the UK, he has worked and travelled all over the world. He co-directs Wind&Bones, a social enterprise that explores how writing can help us connect and reconnect, and is currently based in Sofia, Bulgaria.

A fascinating book to read through or delve into randomly. The chronological layout makes sense for readers new to the subject. The book presents the subject in a manner which has sufficient detail without making it heavy going and boggling the mind. Plenty of clear and illuminating diagrams augment the text. The lightly glossed paper has a quality feel and with the sturdy hardcover the book is good to hold and read. I buy most of my books on Kindle these days, but this is one of those which is definitely better to have in the hard copy.

It features concise summaries on the major philosophers in chronological order, allowing the reader understand the context behind each idea. A perfect starting point for beginners.

This series of Big Ideas books by DK is very good. So far I have purchased a number of them and found them all highly informative and easy to read. This volume on philosophy is particularly good, covering all the main philosophers and many of their ideas in a clear, simple language that is not too difficult for any one to understand, and the illustrations and pictures only add to the overall quality of the text. I have learned a lot from this book and would thoroughly recommend it to others.

I enjoyed this book and found it helpful in understanding the contributions to thought of philosophers throughout the centuries and across the world. I read it from start to finish, but it would be an easy text to dip into selectively. It might be worth investing in the paperback version to facilitate looking up references and studying diagrams. Personally, I think I would have preferred the material to have been presented thematically rather than chronologically.
