By Natalie Ellis on 11 May 2022
This is a lovely information book all about the Queen. It includes lots of facts and lovely illustrations however the first page of my copy was folded over and seems to have been missed when trimming the pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly readable and enjoyable
By P. Barclay on 21 November 2021
Beautifully presented and told, this is a factual story that is narrated and illustrated almost as a fairy tale: ‘There was a little girl called Elizabeth…’. It is written by renowned British Historian, Kate Williams.

The illustrations are not that realistic, yet are very relatable and busy, with snippets of pocket-size, interesting information and cartoonish speech bubbles. With a diary excerpt and timelines, the presentation is excellent. This book is broken down into chapters reflecting different topics. It is most readable for the 7+ age group. It is quick and easy to read and absorb and as you would expect with children’s literature, it does gloss over numerous details. I do think some photos of key moments in the life of Queen Elizabeth would not have gone amiss. This is certainly something that a Dorling Kindersley publication would have endorsed.

It does not stop there, though, as my 29 year old daughter found herself quite absorbed in this hard-back book, stating that she was unaware of some of the background surrounding Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne. It is bang up to date and includes basic information about Meghan Markle who is described as an activist. This book is quite feminist in its approach, focussing exclusively on queens as opposed to kings.

Thoroughly readable, this will be enjoyed from new fluent readers to parents and even those in between!

4.0 out of 5 stars ‘Embark on a fascinating journey through Queen Elizabeth II’s seven decades on the throne’
By CobWeb on 26 January 2022
VERSION ~ PAPERBACK/2021

Clearly written for the younger eye, with colourful illustrations to support from Helen Shoesmith, there are lots of interesting facts with some likely to need further explanation depending on age and exposure to history so far. To draw the eye, the text is in a variety of fonts with KEYWORDS enlarged FOR EMPHASIS, although this is sometimes a bit superfluous, IMO.

In a book this size, it is obviously difficult to cover the life of ‘Our Queen Elizabeth’, but there are bits & pieces I would not have expected to be included and others that are not here, especially in the section entitled ‘THE BIGGEST EVENTS IN HISTORY’.
Also, I am not sure that the 4-page section at the back that shows some other Queens is needed in this book.

The current ‘LOOK INSIDE’ facility + stock images above give an idea of the layout to see if it is the style for you & yours.

From the back cover:

👑 ‘Embark on a fascinating journey through Queen Elizabeth II’s seven decades on the throne.

❓ Did you know that the Queen had to hide in cobwebbed dungeons during the Second World War?
❓ Or that she invented a new breed of dog called the ‘Dorgi’?
❓ And that every year she has two birthdays?

See Queen Elizabeth’s early years as a princess, travel through her magnificent palaces, spot her sparkling crown jewels at her coronation and meet her very famous family!
Along the way, discover everything there is to know about our record-breaking Queen in this beautifully illustrated celebration of her extraordinary life.’

ooOoo

Measuring roughly 27.5 cm x 25.5 cm, the card cover is embellished with a shiny gold finish adding to that regal touch. Inside are 32 good quality, shiny finish pages over double page spreads, bar the very last last, ‘Our Queen Elizabeth’, which is short & sweet...ending appropriately with:

~ ‘Hooray for the Queen!’ 👑

The titles of the sections are:

~ YOUNG ELIZABETH
~ WAR, WEDDING AND NEW ARRIVALS
~ BECOMING QUEEN
~ THE DUTIES OF A QUEEN
~ THE BIGGEST EVENTS IN HISTORY (timeline over 4 pages)
~ THE PALACES
~ JEWELS AND FASHION
~ CORGIS AND HORSES
~ BIG EVENTS (diary extract format)
~ THE QUEEN AND HER PEOPLE
~ THE QUEEN’S FAMILY
~ THE QUEEN AND HER LEGACY
