They still haven't figured out a good way to move around. Teleporting from spot to spot just feels weird. So, without some absolute must have, killer app, I just got bored with it.
It's alright though, I had a few moments that made it all worth while (Elite Dangerous for example or Google Earth) - so yeah, it alright. I'm glad I've got it, but knowing what I know now, not sure I'd buy one again.
The setup is nice and easy and everything is pretty much plug and play. The HMD itself is light and is comfy in lengthy sessions. Ive had no issues with tracking or performance and I dont have a massive PC either.
If I were to list a couple of negatives, you get some lens flaring on games with black backgrounds and white lights, most games manage to avoid this combination really well and this is the same on the Vive.. you just get used to it. Past that, Im a bit worried the foam around the HMD is eventually gonna decompose but so far so good.
- Sound: Really great, although I sometimes wish the headphones could be either removed or moved to the side.
- Visuals: For 1st time VR, the visuals are great and the pixellation isn't noticable when you are immersed. Godrays can be distracting but you do get used to them over time. There is quite a gap below the nose, but this is probably a good thing for air circulation. FOV is pretty narrow, narrower than the Vive I have heard, but this gives the pixel density that makes the visuals pretty great.
- Oculus Home: It's okay, but the UI is too dumbed down and the Store is a nightmare to browse. You can use SteamVR as well so you aren't really compromising by getting the Rift. Oculus Home does do the job and if you are a fan of the Apple-esque simplicity it's alright I guess.
- VR Experience: Don't underestimate motion sickness, it can occur within 15 minutes and can be pretty annoying at times.
- Games: The free games and movies are fantastic and really add to the value of the bundle. Overall VR could use a bit more development but there are plenty to get started and there's something for everyone.
- Performance: Running a i7 4790k and GTX 1070 I haven't experienced any lag in games. With a strong setup it's worth disabling Oculus' dynamic performance adjustments to prevent a loss in quality.
Overall, this or the Vive are great to pick up for 1st Gen VR. The Rift has the advantage of access to the Oculus Store and exclusives, while the Vive has augmented reality and larger room scale. If you aren't in a rush to get VR then waiting for Gen 2 might be ideal but I don't feel like an early adopter with Gen 1. The biggest concern for new VR users is the motion sickness but many games are designed to not cause any. If you can try VR before hand I urge you to do so, but I wouldn't think you would be disappointed by buying a Rift without previously trying it, like myself.
