Someone is looking for Tasha. But does she want to be found?
Eight months ago Tasha Joseph ran away, and her stepmother, Emma, has been searching for her ever since. She is desperate to give Tasha the home and security she deserves.
The problem is, Emma isn’t the only one looking for Tasha. The police are keen to find her too. She could be a vital witness in a criminal trial, and DCI Tom Douglas has a team constantly on the lookout for her. But Tasha remains hidden, and nobody appears to have seen her.
Suddenly, the stakes are raised. Somebody is offering money – a lot of money – for information about Tasha’s whereabouts.
Tom and Emma know they have never been closer to finding the young girl. But they also recognise that she has never been closer to danger. Can they find her first?
She can run – but for how long can she hide?

This is a great short story in which we learn more about Tasha, about the life she is living now on the streets and that which she lived before; under the control of the gang that used her for shoplifting and drug running. She is a feisty character for sure, but she is also just a teenager and she is scared. Having spent so long being beaten down she sees nothing good in herself and although she has found a friend on the streets, she will never truly be safe.
Tapping into the plight of the homeless people of Manchester, Rachel Abbott manages to create a tense, compelling and fraught read which feels authentic but also ties up a lot of loose ends for both Tasha and Emma. I really felt for Tasha, and some sections were hard to read, or in m case listen to as I chose the audio book option, but it was still compelling. Although this isn’t really a Tom Douglas story he does still feature, albeit in a much smaller role. Still, it’s nice to see him stop by. And the ending brings hope for both Emma and Tasha. Whether we hear from either again I don’t know but they are going to be characters that are hard to forget.
Unlike Abbott's previous stories, which are stand-alone stories featuring the wonderful DCI Tom Douglas, this one is a follow-on from Stranger Child. It is highly recommended that you read Stranger Child first, as it goes straight into things and it is assumed you know about lead character, 13-year-old Tasha Joseph, and the background to her story. Tasha is very streetwise for her age due to her upbringing but also very vulnerable. Nowhere Child starts eight months after the shocking end of Stranger Child, Tasha has been missing the whole time and she has her step-mother Emma, the police and people in her previous life all after her. I felt very strongly for Tasha and wanted to give her a big hug. I also liked her friend Andy and her step-mother Emma, who both just want the best for Tasha. It goes without saying that DCI Douglas is his usual brilliant self and will do anything to protect people in danger.
I was one of these people who had been OK with the ending of Stranger Child, as a cliffhanger allows you to draw your own conclusions. But it was good to see what had become of Tasha and her family, even if Tasha's story is grim. It meant I came to care for the characters more than I already had from reading Stranger Child. Another sterling effort from Rachel Abbott.
It all felt hurried and it’s hard to believe it was written by the same person .
I can’t imagine what anybody reading it who hasn’t read the first book would think as I’m sure it would be very confusing . I love the other books I have read but wish ide saved my money buying it
This book can be read as a stand alone story as Tasha's past is described in enough detail to give the reader all they need. But if you've not read the previous offering, Stranger Child, which features Tasha, I really recommend you do - along with the other books in the DCI Tom Douglas series.
I for one am looking forward to more adventures of Tom Douglas.
