Only 6 sports, two of which are extremely similar (badminton and tennis) with a severe lack of game/challenge modes is just not enough. Also do not expect an enthusiastic announcer voice sadly, especially in bowling, where the woman speaking sounds like she had 2 whole minutes to desperately record all her lines before running off to the toilet to answer nature’s call…
So much could’ve easily been added to this, from archery and stunt planes to pool or even table tennis to add a rapid-pace version of the base tennis mechanics.
Avatar customisation…. Well… it barely exists. Almost no options to choose from at launch and cosmetic items can seemingly only be unlocked through online play - which likely means that if you do not pay for Nintendo online then tough luck.
They might fix this lack of content post-launch with free dlc such as the promised golf mode coming soonish, but Nintendo has found itself falling into the same modern trend we all hate of releasing a half-baked product based on promises. Which really IS a shame as the game looks, sounds and controls are really good.
The good:
- Great fun. My sons and I have had a fantastic time playing together. Usually they'll be playing together online in different rooms, so it's refreshing to play together in front of the same TV. Is that old school now?
- Controls are easy to pick up for all ages. Make sure kids use the straps though, my son launched the joycon towards the TV. Reminds me of the Wii days!
- Quick into online games. My first game was with bots then with other real players after that. I started to lose a lot.. :-(
The not so good:
- Looks a bit rough on a 4k TV. Shimmering and jaggies are quite visible.
- Basic graphics. Nintendo Land on Wii U looks better, which is a shame given the extra power the Switch has.
- Not much content. Other games such as archery from Wii Sports Resort would have been welcome.
- To play 2 player football, 2 pairs of joycons are needed. This will lock out some players who only have the joycons that come with the console (luckily I have 2 sets)
In closing, you're paying the Nintendo premium for this game considering the limited content, especially compared to previous Nintendo games. I feel it's not worth £35.
If you're after a modern version of Wii sports though like I was to play with the kids, I think it's worth picking it up. Hopefully they'll add more content in the future to improve the value. But until then, it's 3 stars.
NOTE: THIS GAME CAN'T BE PLAYED ON SWITCH LITE! If buying for someone else, make sure they have the dockable Switch.

I confirm what other reviewers have said, there is very little content. I've seen more in the cheapie games in the Wii shop. There are only 6 games. Football, tennis, badminton, volleyball, Chambara, and bowling. There is fun to be had if you compete with internet folks, otherwise it all gets old pretty quickly.
I also feel let down with the lack of diversity of the sport; tennis and badminton a pretty much the same, just a different scene. Volleyball is pretty similar also.
It seems to be hit and miss with what your arm movement achieves. You can pretty much wave your arm around randomly and win really.
I gather that there is an additional free patch coming in the summer for golf. That might be good. Maybe that's their strategy going forwards, that there will be further updates in the future with more interesting content. No doubt you will have to pay for these though. Makes them more money I guess? but hey I'm only speculating! The cost of the game is too high for what it is - essentially an incomplete game, and if it's a starter pack of sorts then it's definitely too pricey.
The six games:
Tennis - the best of the lot but really very limited.
Bowling - good for a laugh, but easy to master and no variation.
Badminton - like tennis but worse.
Football - crap and you need two sets of controllers for two player mode.
Volleyball - frustrating to say the least.
Chambara - repetitive in the extreme.
It just feels like this should be so good. But it isn't at all. A real missed opportunity. Disappointed.
