Mmmm, loved so much of what she's done, but this misses its mark, by miles. It's a paper thin plot, woven around weak and barely believable characters that simply do not hold together. It reads like a pot-pourri of storylines loosely stapled together in the hope that "something will work out" and, sadly, none of it does. The ending is quite bizarre and wholly unsatisfying, given what has actually gone on in the book. The twists are laborious and the surprises simply aren't. Some passages are cleverly told, but on the whole, it is a tedious read and your time would honestly be better spent elsewhere.

I have read, enjoyed and been moved to tears by other Jojo Moyes’ books but sadly I cannot say that I felt like that about this one. I found the violin obsessed, self centred heroine, very annoying and this is what spoiled it for me. I felt so sorry for her children, particularly the daughter who had to take on the role which her mother should have been playing. Other readers may very well not agree, but it spoiled the book for me. Sorry.

I found a lot of of this book quite irritating and far fetched. I wanted to give Isabel a good talking to. Even allowing for her bereavement, financial predicament and artistic temperament. Byron I loved , Thierry was endearing,Laura was weak, in fact the strongest character in the book was Kitty. The plot like the house was full of holes but by far the most ludicrous thing in the story was the frequent mentions of the lack of a socket to plug the fridge in. Isabel was so lacking in gumption that she couldn't move the fridge to another room with a socket ??!! Food hanging in netting on exterior walls. Isabel playing her violin whilst the house falls down!!!! All a bit silly for me.

I have been promising myself that I would finally get around to reading older books from some of my favourite authors, and Jojo Moyes was top of my list. I kept my fingers crossed that this one would live up to her later books...and for me, yes, it did! Quietly compelling, I enjoyed the array of characters and drama surrounding them and found Moyes' writing as beautiful as ever.

Recently widowed Isabel has been left in a difficult financial situation by her deceased husband and can no longer afford to keep the swish London home she now occupies with her two children. Fortunately, she has been left property by a distant uncle and moves away to 'The Spanish House' in rural Norfolk. Run down and sadly lacking in amenities, it is nothing like the finery her and the children have been accustomed too. Isabel is also unaware that somebody else wants the house...badly! So badly in fact, that he is willing to stop at nothing in his attempt to own the property.

Full of family secrets and well crafted characters, I was drawn into the well woven, nicely paced plot and hope her other older titles are as good.

The "bestseller full of warmth and heart"? I'm 1/4 of the way through this and haven't found any evidence of either warmth or heart. I just passed the part where she played the violin in the woods and the sound supposedly carried all the way to the village, quite a distance away - even if she had run the violin through loudspeakers, I'd question that. I agree with others who have said they disliked the characters, haven't found anyone I want to spend the rest of this book with. Not only that, but the plot (so far) is stretching my willing suspension of disbelief. I'm putting it down now - there are better books to fill my time.
Having said that, I've loved the author's other books. Hope she gets a better idea for the next one.

An enjoyable, lively story! I love her characters and ability to create an enjoyable and interesting storyline. I was never bored or losing attention at any part of this book. Of course, it's a bit unbelievable! That's what takes you out of the realm of daily life. And the characters are exaggerated, somewhat, but it's exactly what I'd expect from a good read. I have already read several Jojo Moyes and hope she continues to write more because I'm devouring them!
