Dame Jacqueline Wilson, DBE, FRSL (born 17 December 1945) is an English writer of children's literature. Because her novels commonly deal with themes as adoption, divorce and mental illness, her work has been called controversial because her readers are young. For her lifetime contribution as a children's writer, Wilson was a UK nominee for the international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2014.

Wilson is the author of many book series. Her Tracy Beaker series, inaugurated in 1991 with The Story of Tracy Beaker, includes three sequels and has been adapted into four CBBC television series: The Story of Tracy Beaker, Tracy Beaker Returns, The Dumping Ground and The Tracy Beaker Files. In February 2016 will mark the 25th anniversary of Trace Beaker, Wilson will also release a book called The Story Of Tracy Beaker: 25th anniversary.

1.0 out of 5 stars So so disappointing
By Claire on 21 July 2022
Unfortunately we found this book very disappointing for the following reasons:

1. Gendered stereotypes everywhere.
Examples: Girls like fairies. Boys like dragons. Girls want to ride unicorns. Girls dress up in heels to look pretty. Boys fight to defend their princess. Girls wear pink. Mummy does the food shopping. Daddy carves wood. All the way through, everywhere.

2. Encouraging feelings to be dismissed/hidden/ashamed of
Examples: He didn't like to admit when he was scared, so he didn't tell anyone.

3. Vanity
Too much focus on looks, especially to do with the fairy. Over and over again.

4. Uninspired
The lands were so anticlimactic. There were only 4: unicorns, bouncy castles, princes and princes, and dragons. (Again... guess which gender liked which one - urgh) and they mostly visited the lands then came home again. The story was slow, and rather dull in many places. (The first entire chapter is dedicated to the in-depths of their car journey to the house, including service station stops and sickness breaks!)

5. Violence
No need for it in what could be a book more based on fun and adventure. Three pages dedicated to dragons bullying one of the children. Also multiple pages on a fight between a prince and saucepan man (as they fight for "their princess" - again, urgh).

6. Unkind
I feel in today's society we focus a lot on teaching our kids to be kind. The older two siblings were often talking down to the youngest, for example mocking her for believing in fairies, and things like: "you're too slow to come with us", "you're silly still dressing up as a princess". Unneeded. Why not write stories modelling the kind of ways we'd like our children to copy.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book and feel very sad that in this day and age such gendered stereotypes are allowed to be printed. If each gendered stereotype had actually been a racist stereotype the book would not have been allowed to be published [rightly so] - so why in 2022 is the same respect for gender not also given?
