I really like the fact that there is a strong scientific basis for all of the ideas but that all of the content is presented in a manner that children could easily understand.
One word of caution. Passively reading the book is unlikely to be as effective as reading it, thinking things through and practicing some things. Therefore different people would need to approach things differently, there is unlikely to be a one size fits all approach.
I would thoroughly recommend this book particularly for:
1) children who want to understand how their emotions can take control of their thinking and can be incredibly helpful as well as challenging
2) adults who want to help children build their understanding and skills
3) adults who would like an introduction to the chimp paradox - this book could be a great start point
A key learning for me (albeit it now seems obvious) is how expectations should ideally change with a child’s age.
As an adult I have a set of experiences, knowledge, thoughts and feelings. It’s easy to see children as smaller versions of adults and in some ways they may be at least some of the time.
However, a child’s abilities change and grow as they get older. Therefore being realistic on what we might reasonably expect a child to be able to think, do, feel etc. could be extremely important.
As adults we are likely to have much greater flexibility and choice available to us. A little thought could make it much easier for the child to behave and express themselves in a way that we’re both as happy with as possible.
It sounds so simple when I put it like that, but it could be a really powerful insight. Making it as easy as possible to get good outcomes – what’s not to like?
In summary a great book but not a magic bullet. It is written in a simple style which could appear simplistic but the ideas are really powerful.
I attended a presentation last week at a conference I attended and heard Professor Peters talk. I was absolutely blown away by how much everything made sense in terms of my kids (and my own!) behaviour. I bought the book for my little boy and we have been going through it every night. I can already see a difference in how he responds to situations. He has a toy chimp that he now uses to demonstrate the different parts of his brain! Our aim is to try and nurture and train him!!
Last night he was asked by school to design a new £50 note featuring a famous scientist he admires. He immediately suggested Prof Peters. Unfortunately he is still alive so Not eligible to enter!!
I know children who I believe need this book based on what I was hearing. I couldn’t wait to get my own copy.
My book arrived, I hoped I’d made the right decision by rushing to buy it.
The cover was nice and bright and once I opened the book up and flicked through a few pages, I knew I’d made a good decision.
The pages are full of colour, friendly text and fun illustrations which anyone would find hard not to like.
It’s not just as good as I was led to believe, it excels what I was expecting.
Very clear, relatable and suitable for everyone and anyone to read or have read to them.
I am so excited and can’t wait to start reading it with the children.
Secondly, the content of the book is a good introduction to the information contained in the Chimp Paradox, which I also have. It's obviously simplified for children. My reason for giving only four stars is that it is, perhaps, slightly over-simplified. It might have been better to provide a bit more background and explanation.
Edited to add: the book has lots of activity pages, where the child is supposed to write or draw something. On the Kindle version, using the Kindle for Android app at least, you can take a screenshot of the page and print it out very successfully.
