My old Merrell bare access trainers (see picture - orange sole) are wearing out and I'm looking for a replacement. The Trail Glove 5 shoes looked ideal; they are a snug fit, but it is noticable that both the forefoot and heel areas are much narrower in comparison to my older trainers.
The reason I'm returning them, however, is Merrell's introduction of completely unnecessary arch support. This places far too much upward pressure on my foot's arches and is so uncomfortable that I didn't want to wear the shoes for longer than a few minutes.
I'm disappointed that Merrell appear to have overlooked the whole point of barefoot style shoes, which is to provide a thin protective layer around your foot's natural shape. Arch support will NEVER be a feature that I require in a barefoot shoe.

I would rate these as the best trail running shoes I've ever owned, and I've gone through plenty in my time. I'm always searching for something that promotes good, efficient running style and the "barefoot" nature of the heel and arch support absolutely delivers. The grip from the soles is frankly amazing - gritty downhills, muddy bogs, stony lanes even rock scrambling are all catered for. Never slipped or had my confidence tested - these trail runners perform.
I tend to run with SealSkinz socks so I can splash through rivers and mud without my feet getting wet. Combined with the Trail Glove 5 it's a match made in heaven. Lightweight and efficient at squeezing out the water my socks and shoes are mostly dry within 200 metres or so. This gives me the confidence to just have at the obstacle without worrying about picking my way around.
In terms of sizing they can be a little tight with thicker socks (like the SealSkinz) so I opted for the next size up and found it to be perfect. I'm a UK 8/ EU 42 so went for the size 9. My feet swell during exercise and I've not experienced any issues with tightness or slippage.
----
Edit after 1100km of hard trails, wading through rocky streams and occasional long roads...
Well, my poor Glove 5s have finally started to show some proper wear and tear. Holes have appeared in the netting between the side straps and the sole has lost much of its tread. I could probably still keep going with them until they simply fell apart but I think they've done enough and deserve a well-earned retirement.
And now to award the highest compliment: I'm going to purchase another pair. They're that good.

Pros: 1, They’re very light. 2, They fit accurately to size. 3, The heal is held very snugly and comfortably- this was impressive.
Cons: 1, Very weird arch support- it isn’t where my arch is! (Unlike every other trainer I own). The arch starts too far back towards your heal, so you stand on it like a lump. Very unpleasant and uncomfortable to wear, even briefly.
2, If you try to jog on your toes, the area at the bottom of the laces digs in to the top of your foot.
3, They are ugly, honestly. Could have looked past this, but there’s no need for them to look so bad.
Perhaps some people have an arch that isn’t is the regular position? If so, this may be the shoe for them! Having much arch support, even in the normal place, doesn’t seem right for a barefoot shoe regardless. A swing and a miss.

Stepped up from my Vapor Glove 4 which I'd had for just over a year to the Trail Glove 5. Big difference - the 5 do offer some level of protection against stones and sharp debris, which the Vapor don't. Much better for my running which takes in roads, footpaths and other off road tracks. Still have the wide toe box, I'm a solid size 9 and I find a 9 fits me perfectly with space to give, no need to size up or down. Literally just finished my first 5K in them and very happy with the feel and protection they offer, whilst still remaining a barefoot running show.

Keeping in mind I use these as a casual shoe more than an running shoe, they have not had a particularly hard life. Super unimpressed, and now struggling to work out what to buy to replace them.
Bought these to replace an ancient pair of Bare Access. Surprised the sole was stiffer, but guess that makes sense given they're a trail shoe. Took a while for my feet to get used to them - but really liked them... until, at just over a year old, one of the sections you lace through just went and snapped on me as I was doing them up yesterday.

I wore these for three weeks whilst jungle trekking in Cambodia. Jungles a re full of rivers, rocks and mud. These coped perfectly, in fact their soft soles and fully permeable mesh front made them perfect for the environment. As soon as you waded through a river, the water would quickly drain through the mesh meaning then never 'squelched' and the soft rubber sole meant you always knew exactly where your feet were and the stability of the ground you were walking on. They would dry overnight or in a couple of hours in direct sunlight. Durability wise, they look pretty much like new after a pretty harsh three weeks. Super comfortable, lightweight, jungle friendly and excellent value for money. They would also slip on and off easily if laced up lightly which in Asia is always a good thing should you need to enter a house, temple or even some shops.

I bought these in the hope that they would give a similar running experience to my Merrell Vapour Glove 4s, but with slightly more durability (my Vapour Gloves, although excellent, are wearing down in the sole FAST...). As soon as i started running in the Trail Gloves, i knew that they weren't for me. They are far closer in feel to a normal running shoe (with very noticeable arch support) and i felt myself reverting back to my former style of running, as opposed to the barefoot style i have recently adopted, which has been hugely beneficial to my knees. I was considering returning the Trail Gloves to Amazon, but luckily i discovered how good they were as a pair of dog walking shoes (which i was in the market for). Very lightweight, very comfortable and once the arch support beds in, a slightly more comfortable alternative to 100% barefoot shoes. So, great to walk in, not great as a pair of barefoot running shoes!
