I am the author of more than forty published crime novels. The first, The Greenway, was nominated for both the Authors’ club award and the CWA John Creasey for best debut novel.

I’m constantly amazed at where life has taken me. Writing had never been on my ‘possible careers’ list, but once stories take root in your brain, they just have to be told - and I feel very fortunate that people want to read them.

I have written several series featuring DI MIke Croft, Ex DI Ray Flowers, amateur sleuth Rina Martin, Ex DS Naomi Blake, merrow and Clarke, Rozlyn Priest and, a series set in the 1920s, featuring DCI Henry Johnstone and DS Mickey Hitchens, plus several standalone novels

In addition to writing I teach creative writing, read and mentor for The Literary Consultancy, am a Royal Literary Fund Fellow and FRSA.

I’ve read the author before, but this is the first ‘Rina Martin’ for me. It won’t be the last! It was an uncomfortable book to read - my childhood wasn’t anything abusive, but I don’t like reading about children living in fear. For me, I don’t mind bad language or cliff-hanger endings (which I believe are some of the criteria disqualifying a book from the ‘cozy’ genre), but a book which deals with child abuse is never going to be ‘cozy’ for me. YMMV! I hope Mac is going to be a feature in these books as well as Rina’s crazy household. It’s not often I rejoice when a killer goes free, but this one - I did!

Bit too much bite to be classed as a ‘cosy’ crime mystery but actually it’s all the better for that.

The characters are interesting and more than two dimensional. The story is made up of several strands, murdering thugs and domestic abusers, but it all comes together in the end. No element of who dunnit either, since we know from the start.

Well written and gripping story. Highly recommended.

I was really surprised by this book. When it said cosy mystery I nearly did not download, as not really my thing. However I really like Jane Adams as an author so thought would give it a go. Very pleased I did! Excellent characters and decent plot. I was very agreeably surprised as there were some very uncosy moments in this book! So pleased there are more to come

This was okay as first in a series go. The main characters are likeable enough, if a little flat. And they go about their lives well enough. It's just that I never felt I was getting to know them; I was just being told facts about them. And I was told they felt this or that emotion, but again it was just a fact. I never felt that emotion in them. So, yes it was okay though I'm not sure yet whether I will read another.

This book took me longer to get involved with the characters but once I did, well I couldn't put it down and read it in about 3.5hrs, this detective is more grittier and case worn than Izzy Parker and Lord Edgerton and there is a stronger murders to solve as well as getting over the last case that still haunts him.I throughly recommend this book and I can't wait to start the next one

McGregor the new detective has issues of his own & this case he is involved in brings this to the fore again but in the end brings a resolution for him with the former tragedy.

A nicely written, gripping story with lively, likable characters. However, I wouldn't class it as a mystery because the reader is aware of who is doing what all along. Likewise, Rima is no Miss Marple as in this particular book she solves nothing. A good, entertaining read, nevertheless.
