Love Adele's books, but being a linguist, I am constantly correcting the poor spelling and grammar. Eg. 'illusive', for elusive; 'she was sat' and 'she was stood' does not exist in the English language. 'Different to' instead of 'different from'. There are myriad glaring errors in this book, which, quite frankly, made me think I was reading a first draft. I would be willing to proofread your books to ensure correct, accurate language.

One of the worst things about this book is the author's inability to write sentences with full stops. Instead, sentences are linked with commas, which is infuriating for any reader who understands and respects the English language. It's the first book I've read by this author and will definitely be the last. It's pretty sloppy of the editors and proofreaders to let this pass.

Lies, Lies, Lies, we all tell them, don’t we? Those little white ones when we want to get out of doing something, or are late for something, but don't want to reveal the reason why. Perhaps we are planning a surprise for a loved one ... or perhaps we are hiding something more complicated.

For some of us have much bigger secrets, and therefore much bigger lies to tell.

Lies of course, aren't always meant to deceive, and are sometimes told to shield those we love from getting hurt. The trouble with lies is that, you almost always get found out, and usually this brings more pain and hurt than you intended by shielding the truth in the first place.

Meet Simon and Daisy, a happily married couple, with a gorgeous 6 year old daughter Millie.

Daisy is happy with her lot, but Simon believes that they should try for another child to 'complete' their family. A trip to the fertility clinic, is one that Daisy doesn't really want to make, but she loves her husband, so decides to go along with it. To us the reader, this is the start of their happy marriage beginning to deteriorate.

Simon isn't always easy to live with. He is what is probably known as a 'functioning alcoholic', but this novel makes us question whether or not such a thing is even possible. After the trip to the clinic, Simon's drinking becomes steadily worse, but Daisy isn't worried, she knows how to handle it. Even if she doesn't like it.

That is until one night at a party that Daisy doesn't even want to go to. Their perfect lives suddenly spiral out of control and are changed forever, in a way that no one could have foreseen.

Lies Lies Lies is told in alternate points of view, and includes some familiar characters to fans to Adele's earlier novels. Not all that likeable, but all real and relatable, you will care about them, and their fate, whether you believe you should or not.

Regular readers of my blog will know, that I am a huge Adele Parks fan, but even I think she has surpassed herself with this novel. It is nothing short of amazing, and I will be recommending it to everyone!

To be honest I haven’t as yet finished this book and I was really really enjoying it until the daughter’s father was revealed rather clumsily I might add, also the way that Daisy capitulated into having sex and a forced relationship is frankly ridiculous! She clearly hadn’t seen this person for years but just let him assume that because he was the child’s father and he wanted a family then that’s was what would happen. Hate it when women are portrayed as weak like this. Will finish this book but I’m wary of downloading any more by this author.
This is a update as I’ve finished the book, it was all cleared up in the end but very convoluted and totally unnecessary deviation from the plot

I nearly gave up on this book several times as I couldn't find anything in it I could buy into. I did ,however, struggle on to the implausible ending. Adele Parks has always been one of my favourite authors but this book did not live up to her others in my opinion. It's just unpleasant with unbelievable characters. I think Leon, the young prisoner was the only one I had any sympathy for. Others have enjoyed it so my opinion may go against the majority but sadly I just found it an intensely depressing read.

Another good story by Adele although Daisy seems to undergo a personality change about two thirds of the way through. Would she really be that weak? The shocking 'incident' involving the kitten is completely unnecessary and adds nothing to the story. I enjoyed the book on the whole but I wish authors (or editors?) would not say 'empty bottle of wine'! If it's empty it's an empty wine bottle.

A dark domestic drama

My thanks to HQ for an eARC via NetGalley of Adele Parks’ ‘Lies, Lies, Lies’ in exchange for an honest review.

This domestic drama deals with some quite difficult subjects including alcoholism, infidelity, the pain of infertility, and domestic abuse. It is a very dark story.

It centres on the troubled marriage between Daisy and Simon. After trying for years to get pregnant and IVF treatments, Daisy becomes naturally pregnant with Millie. However, when Millie is six Simon begins nagging Daisy about them having another baby. He’s already drinking a fair amount, a ‘functioning alcoholic’, but after he receives devastating news at the fertility clinic it pitches him into a downward spiral. I won’t say more in order to avoid spoilers.

The narrative switches between Daisy and Simon throughout. However, I found the pacing rather hit and miss. Also, after spending a lot of the novel developing these issues the end felt very rushed and moved into sensationalism.

I didn’t feel much empathy with either Simon or Daisy. I felt sorry for poor fictional Millie, who is likely to need therapy later on.

2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
