So while the outer packaging of this product is an almost Harrods level of smart, with posh-looking card box and branding, the fact the wooden toy pieces are fine, and compatible with other brands, means they do the job just as well as other brands, but no better.
What makes this OK is the price, at time of writing. From a prosaic cost-of-materials point of view you don’t get a lot of wood for the current twelve quid asking price, but it is only a couple of quid more than the equivalent starter set from the supermarket beginning with T. It may have a few fewer pieces but if it’s being given as a gift, the smart presentation (there’s even a bow!) will impress the parents even if the toddlers are nonplussed.
The figure-of-eight selection means there are a lot of curves and very few straights, including none of the classic standard size that is the bread and butter of other sets. This limits the amount of other arrangements that can be made using just the pieces from this set. So if you are thinking this will be the *only* wooden toy train set, you might want to consider something with a bit more variety. But if it is likely to be joining with pieces from other brands, then the selection of different curves will come in handy, and the crossing point might become a prized piece when the kids are older and building their own complex layouts.
There are better value ways to get a toddler started with a wooden train layout, but if you are more concerned with impressing the parents with the posh gift that you’ve bought for their child, then this offering scores extra points.
You get in the box the wooden track pieces, three signs, some people, a house (which has a wooden stand), some trees and bushes. Everything is wooden, it is not the heaviest wood I have ever felt, it is a bit lightweight but it is all nice and smooth. The pieces also fit together nicely without issue.
All the pieces are chunky and are nicely painted with bright colours, everything is smooth and printed well. A lot of the pieces including the train are branded as well as Jaques of London which is nice as it means some care has been taken.
The train itself for the most part runs nicely, it connects via magnets, which are actually fairly solid, you can hang the trailer off the train and it does not fall, it is good as this keeps everything connected. The wheels are plastic and fairly thin and it runs well on the tracks, however the wheels are fairly thin and when going round corners it sometimes leans a bit and if your not careful can derail.
I have has Jaques of London things before and as always it is beautifully presented, in a box with a bow wrapped round and located in paper inside. It is also a nice touch the they always have a hand picked note and a name with it who put it together, it's a little extra touch that makes these perfect as gifts.
I really like the set and at 11.99, as of June 2022 I think it is great value for a classic set that is nicely presented and works well, It reminds me of sets I used to have as a child and our daughter loves it, simple fun.

The set comes beautifully presented, in a brown box printed with toy pieces in the shape of the union flag (emphasising that this is a British company) and tied round with Jaques branding ribbon. Inside, this was packed in tissue paper and accompanied by a card with the name of the person responsible for packaging the set.
The current price of £14.99 is three pounds more expensive than when I first selected this, but still seems just about reasonable enough for the quality of the set.
The one thing I really wasn’t impressed by is that there is a prize competition (prizes are money off amounts/percentages) with a sticker bearing the legend ‘Is there treasure inside’ on the outside of the box. If you’re a winner, there is a coupon inside the boxes with a congratulatory note and a code to be redeemed on the Jaques website. This is the third box I have received (two from Vine review items, one from something I bought) that contains an ostensibly winning ticket, with a code that cannot be redeemed on the linked-to Jaques web page.
I have deducted a star for this because this is something for children and it’s not reasonable to create this kind of excitement (a treasure hunt, AND a card with a pirate chest on it announcing win), and then provide an access code that’s not recognised.
