PixInsight has taken the astro-imaging world by storm. As the first comprehensive postprocessing platform to be created by astro-imagers for astro-imagers, it has for many replaced other generic graphics editors as the software of choice. PixInsight has been embraced by professionals such as the James Webb (and Hubble) Space Telescope's science imager Joseph DePasquale and Calar Alto's Vicent Peris, as well as thousands of amateurs around the world.
While PixInsight is extremely powerful, very little has been printed on the subject. The first edition of this book broke that mold, offering a comprehensive look into the software’s capabilities. This second edition expands on the several new processes added to the PixInsight platform since that time, detailing and demonstrating each one with a now-expanded workflow. Addressing topics such as PhotometricColorCalibration, Large-Scale Pixel Rejection, LocalNormalization and a host of other functions, this text remains the authoritative guide to PixInsight.- ISBN-103319976885

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

I tend to use onlinje resources for simple explanations, and this book as more of a reference.
Original text: Sadly, for me the first 80 pages on pre-processing I could only describe what I read as a convoluted mess on trying to explain the process of just getting to stack an image. Sadly, PI, does not cater for things like Flat Darks and is, at best mediocre, at creating a stacked image. These are a lot of things you need to get right in preparation and a lot of hoop jumping. If you are lucky you will end up with something you can work with. There is free software (DeepSpaceStacker - DSS) that does a much better job; that is less fussy and less complicated at getting the result you need. You wouldn't need to write 80 pages with DSS, which essentially, gives you just as good a result. My advice, skip the first 80 pages of this book and use DSS for your pre-processing. Post processing, then this book will give you everything you need to get you the results you desire from using PI and create a final image of your hard labor. I, personally, use PI to get as close a final image I want, then switch to Photoshop to polish it up. Sadly, this book, for me isn't very user friendly for beginners. Plenty of YouTube videos out there to get you started. This is only good for reference if you want to get the best out of your images, but be warned... it is very much written in the same style echoing the pompous arrogance the software it is referring too. It assume the reader holds a PhD in Astrophysics, just like the software does to its users. Sadly, we all do not. We just enjoy this hobby we call Astrophotography. If you can get over the fancy jargon in this book you'll be fine, just like you will be fine with the software once you've watched some videos. This book is not for beginners.
Update One: Dropped to 2 stars after really struggling to read this man's rambling comments. Think he'd make better videos that write books. This book is so disjointed and illogically put together in step processing. Going to sell my copy as totally junk for 90% of reading.
Anyways, you do need this book to use PI, but it's let down by the poor layout. It has not been written by someone with good training skills.
Yes, it's laid out in a process format, but many of the steps jump around and even though the 'what to do' is in there somewhere, they’re quite often hidden in other details.
I've worked in education and training complex systems for many years and if I was to write a manual for something as big as this I'd start the book with workflows (OSC, LRGB, SHO). Then for each workflow, lay out the individual processes. Then, for each process have an 'in a nutshell' section saying what the process/script does. Have an optional to read tech section where the tech is explained and then the numbered steps of actually performing the function.
It would also be good to provide a link to sample images you can work with whilst going through the book.
Don't get me wrong, the info is in there, but it's a frustrating read sometimes.
As my opening described, this is the only dedicated book on PI (in English?) and if someone was to re-write it, or create their own, it would be a success.
If you've shelled out 200 odd quid to buy PixInsight, and thousands on AP gear, it is madness not to get this book. Also, the author is an extremely well respected and very approachable member of the PI community and responds to help requests on the forum.
A great resource.
