4.0 out of 5 stars Needs varnishing
    By Katie B on 1 September 2021
I didn't read the reviews before I bought this so wasn't aware of the varnishing issue.

When it arrived the box states 'varnished' so I was quite pleased. However, as mentioned in other reviews, it is only one side that is lightly varnished. I assembled the bench quite quickly and easily and then came to read the reviews about how to assemble the back strip. This is where I found that customers who didn't add varnished tended to find the bench becoming mouldy after about a month. I also realised through the reviews that two slats are chamfered. I took the bench apart, gave it two coats of varnish, found the chamfered pieces and reassembled it. The strip at the back went on with just a screwdriver so that was okay. It does look nice and compliments the other garden furniture so am quite happy with it. I'm just pleased I had the time to put the work into it.

First photo is of bench unvarnished and without back strip and second photo is bench complete with two coats of a natural oak varnish.

I've given 3 stars under the waterproof heading as I wasn't sure it would be and didn't want to risk it, which is why I added the varnish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Okay but needs some work on it
By Lindsay on 20 June 2021
This arrived promptly and I set about putting it together. I had my Philips screwdriver ready but, please note, it also requires a small spanner to tighten the nuts. Luckily I had one that had come with another flat pack product but it would be good if they included one with the bench. The first thing I noticed was that the wooden slats are not a uniform colour and appear to have an extremely thin varnish randomly added - some areas covered, others not. I also noticed that one of the two chamfered slats (for the top and front) had a split all the way down it. I've filled this with wood glue and hope that will be enough to stop it from breaking. There was also a quite long scratch down one of the metal ends and then, annoyingly, even though I was being very careful, the same end got scratched even more during my putting it together....the surface of the metal is evidently very easily scratched. The hardest part of assembly is fitting the metal strengthening bar as it has to be bent into shape as you attach it and there are no pilot holes for the wood screws so you will also need a bradawl to start them off. It might be a difficult assembly for some people. The bench does look good and I will be giving it a light sand, three coats of yacht varnish and touching up the scratches to make it more weatherproof. So, all in all, an okay bench though I think it's very overpriced. In response to others who said that the wood started to go mouldy after being out for a month or so....it does need to be varnished as it's not made from hardwood.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poor varnishing.
By Valleyman on 14 August 2021
Pleased that all parts in box and easy to assemble. If you make sure all nuts & bolts are tight it is quite sturdy for 2 adults to use. Was not happy with the wood varnish finish. Back of the wood had hardly any varnish so used a medium sandpaper and stripped it all off both sides, then used a Ronseal 10yr Woodstain in Teak colour before assembly. I am now pleased I have a good patio bench for under £60. Note: The above picture is after one coat of stain. I am 78 with plenty of time so within the next few days will give it a second coat of stain for winter protection. This bench is not very heavy so don't let children play on it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok for dry climate, useless in Britain.
By Joseph Hannett on 16 January 2021
I wasn't expecting that much for the price to be honest and I was fully expecting to have to care for this product as it is outside and takes the full brunt of the weather. However, I definitely wasn't expecting it to start going moldy within one month of being outside. I gave it three stars because its relatively well built and, probably in some nicer climate, it would be fine. However, it looks rubbish now, after one month, so wouldn't recommend it to anyone who lives in Britain or anywhere else that has a lot of rain.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible quality. Won’t last a year
By Gem on 23 January 2021
Terrible quality. Don’t waste your time. Bought a month ago and put outside. Not used as it’s winter and noticed mould and cracks! Contacted Amazon and they said could only help if I return. Then said because it’s been a month can’t help.
