I was so excited to get this book, there’s a lot of hype about it on social media. It’s listed as horror, but I’d describe it as a creepy supernatural story, a new term I came across is Chiller a thriller with a supernatural element such a book is right up my street. I’m so glad that I got to read it, I absolutely loved it!!I’ll be shouting from the roof tops about this one. It’s in my books of the year.The blurb sounds deliciously creepy.Mallory is delighted to get a new job looking after 5 year old Teddy. Until Teddy starts drawing pictures which clearly show a dead woman. It is his friend Anya. Even when the paper and crayons are removed the pictures keep appearing.It’s a beautifully written character driven story with a supernatural element. It’s got lots of pictures in, it’s kind of like a blend between a graphic novel and regular novel.Mallory is the narrator, I love the first person narrative, it helps you really engage with the characters. Mallory is easy going, but had issues she’s struggled to overcome. She has a great bond with Teddy. Teddy is a sweet kid.The creepiness is drip fed by the pictures and the reader learning about the house’s history. The book is full of Teddy’s drawings. They are revealing the story of Anya. It’s a very effective method of reveal and also increases the creep factor as they come via an innocent 5 yr old.I am not a big book reader usually choosing kindle or audiobook in preference, I would say that the printed version is the best one to go for with this book for the full immersive experience. The pictures are described so you’re not left hanging with the audiobook.As for the plot what looks straightforward is anything but.This is a marmite book with the reviews, and initially I let the nay sayers influence me, and I shied away from reading it (as I’d had a run of mediocre books) even though I love the subject matter. You’ve got to be open to the supernatural element to enjoy it.Ideal for readers of C J Tudor, and those who loved Alex North The Whisperman.
