This volume has it all including a very heartfelt and serious message from the Author [but told in a very matter of fact way] about mental illness and how you can and MUST get help. We know that Charlie has had anxiety/self-harm issues in the past, and tied into that, problems with eating but in this story, Charlie finally confesses all to Nick and Nick is so upset that HE starts to panic. Thank God for Nick's mum who is completely amazing [and MUCH more understanding than Charlie's own mum], and things eventually start to get better.
There are characters I dislike intensely such as Nick's brother David [🤬🤬], and I'm not that keen on his stay-away dad either, but there are FAR more likeable/loveable characters 💕💕💕, too numerous to name here, who make you feel as though everything will turn out OK in Heartstopper: Volume Five, which will sadly be the last in the series. I understand that Netflix have picked up the rights to the series, and can only hope that they don't Americanise it too much...otherwise it will be ruined. ***update. I understand that the cast is British and is based over here, so fingers crossed. 🤞🤞🤞***
This one completely broke me into tiny pieces.
If it’s not enough to lead a normal life around bullying homophobic people now we finally learn how bad Charlie’s distress has gone.
When you love someone and they are in pain you do not walk away. And I love how this lad is only 16 (turns 17 in this book) and is wanting to help the person he’s in love with and do it right.
I wish everyone had a mom like in this book. Supportive, down to earth and making it an aim to help her son to help his boyfriend.
That’s all we as parents can do, be there. Be supportive.
Sometimes you just aren’t able to, qualified experts may be the route you need to encourage them to go down.
I can’t wait for book 5.
Following these two guys so very much in love I need to know what happens next.
Such a wonderful insightful author.
Volume 4 focuses mainly on Charlie's mental health and oof, did it hit me hard or what! I think if anyone has ever struggled with their mental health at any point in their life, they will be able to identify with what Charlie goes through. Things do get worse before they get better, and Charlie learns that it's not going to be an easy or straight road, but it's possible for things to look up, and it's okay to have others to lean on for support.
I know all my reviews have gone on about how much I love Nick and Charlie, but really, it's true. I didn't think I could love them more but volume 4 has proven me so wrong. This ship is FOREVER.
ps. I adore Nick's mum and his relationship with her, I adore Charlie's sister, Tori, and I loathed, absolutely *LOATHED* Nick's brother, who is the absolute WORST! I don't even understand how someone as soft, sweet and bighearted as Nick can be related to someone as awful as his brother. It's wild!
pps. i equally adore all the other couples in this story, even Mr Ajayi and Mr Farouk! 😍 The "Firsts" heartstopper mini-comic featuring their relationship was simply too adorable and made me want a comic just for them (pls?)!
I think it was brave of Alice Oseman to cover such a deep and disturbing mental illness in this light way without being dismissive of the issues. It shows the effects of the illness on Nick but not those around them. Charlie and Nick’s relationship gets much deeper as a result and this volume covers a much larger amount of time.
I have really enjoyed this series. While it is mainly focused on coming out and a new and unlikely relationship, it packs a good punch and covers a lot of things, especially thoughts and feelings in such a short space of time.
I would recommend this easy-to-read graphic novel, aimed at young adults to all. Anyone wanting to learn more about LGBT relationships, coming out, young friendships and eating disorders would find this a good and easy place to start.

Despite these heavy topics, we still get some adorable moments of affection between Charlie and Nick. We also get some insights into the lives of Nick and Charlie's friends who are all such friendship goals. I really enjoy this series, it just warms my heart and I can't help but smile reading it.
Also, not completely related to this story, but I wish all comics were formatted like this. The font is large and easy to read and there's not too much happening on any one page so the simple beautiful line drawings have plenty of room to breathe. I love the style and layout of these comics which is just an added bonus to a great story.
