Graham is just an ordinary teenage guy — not doing his school homework — until Great Aunt Bertha descends on the household. And is she strict! A woman with strong views and a secretive past, she has little tolerance for the lazy or the slapdash. Indeed it seems she has little tolerance for anything at all, including Graham’s seven year old sister, Jess, whom she upsets within minutes of arrival. It is at that point a plan is hatched: Great Aunt Bertha must leave. Whether by fair means or foul, she must go. But things are not all they seem. In a moment of reflection, Graham decides to hand in his homework — an act of redemption…which somehow goes wrong, leading him to detention — and his first meeting with Clare…
A humorous story of family — their actions and unforeseen consequences, and of blossoming romance. Will Jess’ dolly recover from bellyache? Will Graham ever finish his English homework? Will harmony ever return to the Hopkin’s family? And will Great Aunt Bertha ever leave…?
A short story for a bus or train ride … or just because you like short stories – with a bit of flavour …

But enough fan girling and down to business. ‘Bertha’ a germonic name dating back to anglosaxon meaning ‘bright one’ is an apt description of the books journey (and not just for describing great aunt Bertha’s colourful attire!). This story follows a young lad living in a family when a strange old aunt from up north comes to visit and starts shaking things up! The story is captivating, funny, and mischievous. Hutchroft writes with the lyricism and wit of Roald Dahl, guiding you gently through the narrative like a grandfather in a rocking chair steering you through telling nostalgic stories from their youth. There is something quite heartwarming about the writing and the way the characters interact, with an unpredictable wonderful ending. Hutchcroft also manages to navigate some fairly pertinent important issues for young people that are not often explored in childrens fiction in a sensitive yet important manner- Envoking and acknowledging emotions to normalise and understand, that whilst we live in a wonderful world, things aren’t necessarily all wonderful all of the time. Which leaves you feeling refreshed and humbled. With social media, our youngsters are often left with the impression that the rest of the world is perfect, as is often told in fairy tales. If there were more childrens books like this one, acknowledging that this is not always the case and that’s ok, we can be wrong, we’re allowed to feel upset, we’re allowed to make mistakes and we’re allowed to feel angry, I really feel this would be a good thing for all of our mental health. I’m summary and quite ironically this small story is the ‘big Bertha’ of childrens literature, packing considerable fire power, trail blazing the path for other authors to follow. I would heartily recommend reading this book whether child or adult alike and look forward to reading more from this talented author…
Who is Great Aunt Bertha? Will our hero Graham ever finish his homework or get 'the girl'
of his dreams? Adults will identify with this tale too and chuckle at miss- spent youth!
Nice and short, easy to pick up and even throws in a side story which I would have liked to explore. Perhaps in the next book?
