Welcome to my Amazon page. I am an English television presenter and journalist who has worked in current affairs and Newsrooms since 1980. In the 1990's I hosted Ready Steady cook for the BBC and through the 2000's presented ITV's flagship daytime magazine This Morning.

Since then I have discovered the joy of writing novels. The Good Servant is my tenth novel. A breakaway from my usual theme of Cornish village life by the sea. The Good Servant focusses on a real woman who spent her twenties and thirties devoted to Princess Elizabeth ( Queen Elizabeth 2) and Princess Margaret as children, but ended up an outcast.

I live in Cornwall and have four children and three cats. I have a motorbike licence, a power boat licence and I make good roast potatoes.

A departure from Cornwall but well worth the journey

Firstly, never think that Fern Britton writes just for women. All of her books have a universal appeal and, having enjoyed all of her other books I wondered what this new title would be like. She described it as a departure from her normal work and, indeed, we have left Cornwall and its residents behind to focus on London. Royal London to be precise and here we have a fictionalised account of Marion Crawford (Crawfie) as she was known who was the Governess to Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. We get a highly competent glimpse into life in the Royal household and this tale of one woman's life torn between loyalty to the crown and the love of her life is a real page turner. I was going to try and make this last for several days but I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day and a half.
This is a believable, thought provoking, well researched historical novel delivered with all the charm and expertise you would normally associate with Fern's books. A departure indeed but a welcome change and a first class novel. Highly recommended.

Finished it but - oh dear - it was very twee, two dimensional and not a single character that was likeable. You’d think, too, that Hodder & Stoughton could afford better proof readers - so many spelling errors (e.g. too instead of two: draft instead of draught) missing words and typos. Disappointing reading experience.
