Betrayal, war, and the risks of loyalty collide in the epic conclusion of the First Argentines series by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Lady’s Ransom.
Ransom Barton has served three Argentine kings. The new successor to the throne is the ruthless Jon-Landon, a fallible strategist when it comes to war. After losing against the Occitanian armies, the king forces Ransom to bear the blame and removes him from the council. But Jon-Landon isn’t yet through with humbling the honorable knight of Ceredigion.
When a retaliatory battle succeeds, Jon-Landon invites Ransom back into his circle. Though Ransom’s Fountain magic is made stronger by his fealty, he’s once again forced to make a terrible choice. And this time, Ransom’s wife, Claire, and their sons could pay the price for Ransom’s loyalty.
But as tensions between Ceredigion and Occitania reignite and alliances at court begin to crumble, a desperate Jon-Landon discovers his only ally is the knight he betrayed. With the future of Kingfountain hanging in the balance, Ransom agrees to help. And as secret enemies reveal their endgame, Ransom knows that he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice for the survival of the Argentine dynasty.

Review
“The inevitable showdown between two Fountain-blessed antagonists brings this excellent four-part series to a close. Wheeler has woven a grand story based on the actual adventures of William Marshall in the time of King Stephen I of England, recasting the basic themes of King Arthur legends: loyalty and courage in the face of adversity.” —Booklist

As with the rest of the series (and in truth, all of Mr Wheeler's stories) this book packed a lot of punches. There is no lack of intrigue. Will fairweather friends come through or stab you in the back; will the fountain continue to support Ransom; will his children survive; will his wife tire of his ceaseless support of the Argentine line?
So many questions, and answers you won't always like but the story grabs you and doesn't let up until the end.
I hope you enjoy this book and this series as much as I have. Mr Wheeler is a fantastic author who is so good at weaving storylines around an element of history and making it so believable. I think all his books would make excellent films or TV series.
I haven't mentioned the actual story, as one, you have the book blurb for that but also I don't want in any way to spoil it for you, the reader.
So 5 ☆ for this book and for this series. It does not disappoint. 😎
For instance Ransom could kill loads of knights but not the poisoner.
The last book told me why he could never kill the poisoner. She was needed for the last book
I absolutely hated the ending.
I feel so upset, angry and cheated
