This book describes a selection of 25 Road Trips across England, Wales, and Scotland (None are in Northern Ireland). It is slightly bigger and heavier than your average paperback book and contains a foldout map inside the back cover. I was not clear who primarily the book is aimed at as the first sections on ‘Getting to Great Britain’, ‘Practical Information’, ‘Driving in Great Britain’, ‘Where to Stay’ and ‘Where to eat’ really seem to be aimed more at English speaking tourists from outside Britain. The ‘Where to Stay’ section splits accommodation into Inexpensive, moderate, and expensive, but I would have liked to see a Budget option as well with maybe a mention of YHAs and other hostels. Each of the 25 walks has a reasonably detailed map showing the route, a high-level introduction, suggested activities and a ‘Plan your drive’ section before a more detailed look at different locations on the route. I did think that including ‘Opening times’ in the ‘Plan Your Drive’ section was a bit unnecessary as it says pretty much the same thing for each of the drives and could have just been included in the Practical Information section. The route description includes the main locations on the route, dotted with photos and basic maps of some of the places, and has simple instructions for getting from each location to the next. Whilst not the same level of detail as guides to these specific locations, the book does do a good job of highlighting a range of attractions along these routes. While I am not sure that I will be driving any of these routes exactly as described, I do expect to visit some of the areas of these walks, staying in one or maybe two locations and then using the book to select places to visit from that base. So, this will be a useful reference for that sort of holiday.
