📝 ‘AQA GCSE English Language is tougher than ever…
…but this CGP book is the ultimate all-in-one guide to the new Grade 9-1 exams!’
There aren’t enough words in the English Language to express how good it is 😉’
That being a touch of the CGP humour you either love or hate that is not so noticeable in this particular publication, IMO. It applies a more direct & definitive tone explaining to students what they will definitely have to analyse in each paper and the key contextual information students would need to know.
THE COMPLETE REVISION & PRACTICE GUIDE is still laid out in the familiar CGP format; seemingly busy on the first flick-through but logically broken up & easy to read for the best part, with just the explanatory notes, arguably, a bit harder in colour & a less bold font.
Perhaps the most valuable section of this book, though, in terms of improving students’ outcomes is the GRADED ANSWERS section at the end of the book. Exploring, analysing and critiquing answers at a Grade 4-5 (old C grade), Grade 6-7 (old B grade) and 8-9 (old A/* grade) level encourages students to see the difference between the answers and consider how they could close the gaps in their attainment.

Measuring around 20.75 cm x 29.5 cm, the front cover is in graded PURPLE shading and opens to 136 good quality, matte-finish pages, split over main sections:
1. EXAM BASICS
2. READING - UNDERSTANDING TEXTS
3. READING - LANGUAGE AND STRUCTURE
4. WRITING - CREATIVE AND NON-FICTION
5. PAPER 1 - SAMPLE EXAM AND GRADED ANSWERS
6. PAPER 2 - SAMPLE EXAM AND GRADED ANSWERS
7. PRACTICE EXAMS
The PRACTICE EXAM PAPERS follow the same format of the actual exams in terms of font, layout & structure, which builds familiarity & can also help boost confidence in students.
The revision guide finishes with the ANSWER SECTION, a handy 3-page GLOSSARY & an alphabetical INDEX.
Each section is subdivided into good sized parts, all colourfully laid out, with the main headings in WHITE on PURPLE or GREEN backgrounds; the sub-headings in BLACK lettering on GREEN. The WARM-UP QUESTIONS have a PASTEL BLUE shaded background; each REVISION SUMMARY a PASTEL LEMON shaded background, so they are easy to spot and the usual tick the box system is there when you feel confident to move on.
Helpful notes and handy reminders are littered throughout, e.g.:
From ‘19th Century Texts’ page 36:
📝 ‘In the exam, any words in the text that aren’t used today will be defined for you in a glossary.’
From ‘Bias’, page 55:
📝 ‘Ask yourself whether a text is biased…
A good way to spot bias is when the writer presents their opinion as fact (by saying something confidently) but giving no evidence for it. This weakens their argument – they could be saying something ridiculous.’

If you want some extra revision and want to see how you would do in the real GCSE exam, this is the book for you. Would highly recommend considering the price.
I like the touch of the CGP humour that they added in. It adds to the book without a doubt. My only regret is not discovering this book sooner.
Overall, good for the price - would highly recommend!
