The whole range of basic grammar is covered here from verb forms to the use of adjectives to pronouns and much, much more in a total of 145 units. The basic format has not changed at all-a page of theory with clear explanations often using pictures followed by a page of controlled practice which reinforces the material learnt in three or four different exercises. The exercise pages could be photocopied although now, unlike earlier editions, the pictures are colour rather than black and white which makes them more attractive but could be an issue for a cheaper copier.
In addition to the 145 units of grammar, there is a very useful section of diagnostic practice which allows you to complete multiple choice questions to identify where you are making mistakes-you are then pointed to specific units for help with those particular areas. There are also additional practice exercises with answers plus sections on regular/irregular verbs and American English. The book is aimed at a B1/B2 Intermediate sort of level,, but actually much of this material could be used up to First Certificate Level in reality.
In recent years, this kind of book has become unfashionable as conversational driven learning methods have been promoted. However, as a practitioner of many years standing, I can confidently say there is a place on everyone's bookshelf for this volume whether you are student or teacher-I have frequently been appalled by the ignorance of grammatical theory among some who are trying to educate others. Certainly if you want to teach students not only to speak English, but also to understand what they are saying and why they are saying it then this book is invaluable. This observation is even more relevant when teaching written English where the theory on offer here is vital to understanding. Strongly recommended.
Goes straight to the point!
