Sylvie is a London-based barrister and district judge. She is set to advance in her career and she's embarked on a promising new relationship. However, as the novel proceeds Sylvie is forced to confront an event in her past, despite her reluctance to do so. The narrative mostly consists of Sylvie's inner dialogue, with occasional flashbacks to her youth spent in Scotland. Nothing really happens until the end when we discover the full details of Sylvie's past and the mystery of the bodies is solved.
Although I was sufficiently interested to keep reading until the end I found the novel thin on plot and ultimately quite bleak. It's OK as an easy read to pass the time but that's about it.
I hated that description of the teenage years- it was depressing to read. I sincerely hope it not truly indicative of kids today. Or even 20 years ago.
All a bit contrived and repetitive.
I love the way the novel introduces the players and subsequent storyline. Lives are suddenly thrown into chaos as accusations are made. Harriet has a real knack of mixing business with pleasure. In this case she has truly succeeded.
Highly recommended.
However, i did guess the ending as soon as one of the characters are introduced - i wont spoil it for you!
I enjoy Harriets books as they are always about lawyers and the court cases, i always find this so interesting and would love to have more details about cases in future books.
I did feel for Sylvie in her friendship with Tess for the majority of the story...
However, I never feel like Harriets aim in any of the books is for us to like the characters, so i wouldnt really put it as a negative.
To be honest i did struggle to get through this one, i didn't feel enagaged enough to keep reading constantly - unlike her other books.
