How far would you go to protect your darkest secrets?
When teenager Sadie Winter jumps from the roof of her school, her death is ruled as suicide – a final devastating act from a troubled girl. But then the broken body of a young boy is discovered at the same school and it’s clear to Detective Kim Stone that these deaths are not tragic accidents.
As Kim and her team begin to unravel a dark web of secrets, one of the teachers could hold the key to the truth. Yet just as she is about to break her silence, she is found dead.
With more children’s lives at risk, Kim has to consider the unthinkable – whether a fellow pupil could be responsible for the murders. Investigating the psychology of children that kill brings the detective into contact with her former adversary, Dr Alex Thorne – the sociopath who has made it her life’s work to destroy Kim.
Desperate to catch the killer, Kim finds a link between the recent murders and an initiation prank that happened at the school decades earlier. But saving these innocent lives comes at a cost – and one of Kim’s own might pay the ultimate price.
The utterly addictive new crime thriller from the Number One bestselling author – you will be gripped until the final shocking twist.
Watch out for more from Detective Kim Stone

About the author

Angela Marsons is the Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author of the DI Kim Stone series and her books have sold more than 5 million in 7 years.
She lives in Worcestershire with her partner and their 2 cheeky Golden Retrievers.
She first discovered her love of writing at Junior School when actual lessons came second to watching other people and quietly making up her own stories about them. Her report card invariably read "Angela would do well if she minded her own business as well as she minds other people's".
After years of writing relationship based stories (The Forgotten Woman and Dear Mother) Angela turned to Crime, fictionally speaking of course, and developed a character that refused to go away.
She is signed to Bookouture.com for a total of 28 books in the Kim Stone series and her books have been translated into more than 27 languages.
Many of her books, including Blood Lines, Dead Souls, Broken Bones, Fatal Promise and Dead Memories reached the #1 spot on Amazon on pre-orders alone and the translation of Dead Souls, La Verita Sepolte, recently won the prestigious Primo Bancarella award.

I was torn writing this review between waiting, processing and savouring what I had read ,or just capturing my emotions as raw as a fresh read can leave them. And raw they are. This book has given me a complete book hangover. I am not sure I can wait for book nine and I am as equally unsure that I can get over this one. This has to be the Team's most emotional and personal case to date and that is all I will say on this matter. You need to read to find out why. But believe me, it's traumatic.
The plot then? Well Kim and Bryant are called to the scene of a potential suicide, the person involved reported to be atop an old bell tower at a very prestigious school. By the time they arrive it is too late, the young girl seemingly having jumped or fallen. It should be an open and shut case but something about the scene sets Kim’s Spidey senses tingling, much to Bryant’s dismay. And this is where it all begins because, dear reader, by this point we know what really happened.
Now if you’ve read the prologue which has been floating about in cyberspace (and which I have provided the link to above) then you are probably already anticipating something epic, something that will be so tense, so off the charts fabulous that you have to wonder if it can live up to expectation. I can tell you now that it does. From start to finish I was totally immersed in this book, gripped by the story and trying to piece together what was going on. A story of privilege, secrets, abuse, bullying, hazing and murder, this book really has a bit of everything for everyone. Including a good side dose of Barney. We love Barney.
The team is on fire this time around and we get to see them all in their element. There is a side track to the main action as Kim performs their overdue staff appraisals and you get a true measure of the respect she has for her team and they for her. Perhaps driven a little bit by prejudice against the higher classes and their sense of entitlement, there is no denying they also have a real sense of justice, and all are determined to find out what really occurred. None more so it seems than Kev Dawson who finds a kindred spirit amongst the tortured and victimised children at the school, seeing his own school days play out once more and making him more determined to uncover the truth about the secret societies which rule the school. Alongside the team there are a quite a few recognisable characters reappearing in the book to support the investigation, including Kim’s longstanding nemesis, Alex Thorne. A brief but thoroughly enjoyable interaction that I think could pave the way for more cameos in the future perhaps? Great news if, like many, you are a fan of this master manipulator.
As the bodies rack up, the secrets start to be revealed, one by one, and so the tension begins to build. Slowly, surely, definitely, until a dozen or so chapters from the end the sense of foreboding, the shadow cast in the prologue, which looms large and lingers over them all like an ominous threat, becomes so intense that my heart began to race, my muscles tighten and my nails, never in the longest or tidiest of conditions to be fair, saw themselves being chewed to the quick. And oh that ending … I am still so lost, so completely floored by it. So utterly perfect, and a truly fitting way to end, but by god so emotional that I am raw and perhaps a little scarred too. I’ll forgive Ms Marsons one day for putting me through the torment. Not sure when, but it will happen. It there is one Kim Stone book that will reduce you to tears then I truly think this is it.
If you love this series then you will love this book. A work of absolute class which will leave you shocked, frustrated, angry and devastated whilst keeping you totally and utterly thrilled. Possibly one of my favourite (and certainly the most devastating ) books to date. Superb. Totally deserves one of these ...
There will be no spoilers in this review, as the enjoyment of this story I believe, is a lot to do with the tension and secrecy held in the storyline and plot.
As is usual with this series, the well thought out characters draw you into the story, the banter between the regular characters gives an insight into their different personalities and makes for a few giggles, in parts.
The violence death of a young girl at a private school, sets the pace, getting more and more difficult to get to the truth, the more the team dig the more the secrecy becomes impossible to penetrate.
I think this is my favourite so far in this series, it's impossible to put down, I couldn't make my mind up who was responsible even though I did have a few suspects. It's an edge of your seat with a few red herrings, I have to admit it was a surprise to find out the truth.
I'm afraid to say I was also totally gutted at the end, and shed a load of tears!
I can't recommend this highly enough,
Kim Stone is responding to a call after reports that a young girl is on the roof of a school nearby threatening to jump. But by the time Kim arrives at the scene to try and take control of the situation and save the young girl’s life, the girl is already dead. As Kim tries to work out the facts, she comes to the startling conclusion that the girl may have been murdered. But she has to fight to be granted permission to investigate the case as the force is keen to brush it under the carpet as a tragic suicide. As Kim’s investigation into the young girl’s death deepens, she uncovers evidence that it may be linked to exclusive clubs within the school. As the body count rises and other student’s lives are put at risk, she makes it her mission to stamp out whatever it is that is going on.
One character who I think particularly shone in this book was Kev Dawson. We learn a lot more about Dawson’s history in this book and as the team continues to investigate what is going on at the school, a bond forms between him and a student there, Geoffrey. Geoffrey reminds Dawson very much of how he was when he was Geoffrey’s age. Dawson’s character development in this book was one of the most interesting aspects to explore, and it was something that I wasn’t expecting from him.
Whenever I read a new Angela Marson’s book, it always reminds me how much I love Kim Stone as a character. She is a detective who will root for you no matter your background. This is portrayed early on in the book when there is little determination from her team to investigate the death of the young girl, but Kim is determined to fight her corner and she is quick to remind her team of their duties.
This is another excellent addition to this series. It is a tense read that will keep you guessing and it will keep your eyes glued to the page. Dying Truth is another top read from Angela Marsons.
