Jeremy Clarkson began his writing career on the Rotherham Advertiser. Since then he has written for the Sun, the Sunday Times, the Rochdale Observer, the Wolverhampton Express & Star, all of the Associated Kent Newspapers and Lincolnshire Life. Hmmm not what I thought

I was expecting this to be a full narrative of the first year on the farm. Turns out it’s extracts from his column in the Sunday Times which have been arranged in a sort of yearly order. No doubt there will be snippets I’ve not heard of before from watching the TV series, only read first few chapters, but initially I’m disappointed. Hoping there would have been some photos from the farm or behind the scenes, but no nothing like that.

Although I don't read newspapers, I was expecting this book to be original but it seems as though it has been thrown together with extracts from Clarkson's newspaper column, it even says its written from extracts in one of the first pages. I'm quite upset and disappointed as I don't think this fact was given when I pre-ordered the book and now I'm hesitant to give it as a present which is why I bought it in the first place. It seems as if it's more of a publicity stunt which I've ended up contributing towards, I'm sure the book will be mentioned in series 2 of Clarkson's farm.

I feel a bit cheated after reading this book ! I thought it would contain new material . I didn’t realise to was a book of Sunday Times articles . I was expecting to learn more about the farm and it’s characters .

I love the illustration on the front and back of the book, especially the map of Clarkson Farm which reminds me of books i would read as a child. I also love how the text in the book is large and in an easy font to read making it accessible for chicken and dyslexic adults to read which really conveys the fact that Clarkson is a child in the way he writes and learns on the farm and I hope this font/text size changes to something more mature if Clarkson ever writes another book to show his maturity on the farm.
I have to admit I did skip to the end before starting at the beginning and thought it was wondrously hilarious. I definitely recommend this book to Clarkson lovers!

The main point to note here is that this book is a compilation of Clarkson’s Sunday Times articles. I was aware of this and enjoyed the book but if you are a regular reader of that newspaper you are likely to feel shortchanged.

There is a strong sense that this book has been padded out - the font is very large, almost akin to that of a child’s book. There are also needless drawings of Clarkson in various poses about his farm between each article (chapter) as well as blank pages either side of the drawings. I read the entire book in about 2 days and many readers would probably finish sooner than that.

However the writing is typical Clarkson - punchy and humorous. I really enjoyed his descriptions and insights of learning to be a farmer. I had already watched his series on this on Amazon and wanted more and this book delivers that.

A short but enjoyable book, not worth the publisher’s recommended price but worth Amazon’s heavily discounted price. Recommended.

I had never considered Jeremy Clarkson funny before reading this book but am now converted into a total fan. His descriptions of coming to terms with a farming laugh are hilarious and the fact that he is poking fun at himself as well as having a decided poke at the various authorities makes this a very funny book. If you want a book to settle down with that will cheer you up and make you laugh out loud then go for this one.

Jeremy Clarkson had bought a thousand-acre farm back in 2008 and employed a local man to look after it.
When the local retired in 2020, Clarkson decided to take over it himself and Amazon were interested in filming how he would get on.
Jeremy writes he was confident at first that he would be able to manage, but he chose a very uncertain time for the country. This has included Brexit and three national lockdowns because of the Covid pandemic. All these factors have had an effect on farming.
He has called his farm Diddly Squat because that is what he claims he makes from it. In the book, we also are introduced to Kaleb, Clarkson’s tractor driver, who is one of the stars of the TV show.
Of course, one of the first items he buys is a tractor, and it has to be a Lamborghini tractor. Predictably all the other farmers nearby inform him that the machine is too big. This machine has well over 150 operating buttons!
The book is very readable and is split into the months of the year, starting in May and then ending the following May.
Clarkson is provocative throughout the book, and quick to give his opinion. This is what causes people to love him or loathe him. Many different people and authorities are not spared his wrath. For example, he has some very outspoken views on parish councillors. He must have had a few run ins with them in the past.
I found the book a good companion to the TV series.
