The truth was dead and buried… until now.
When a collection of human bones is unearthed during a routine archaeological dig, a Black Country field suddenly becomes a complex crime scene for Detective Kim Stone.
As the bones are sorted, it becomes clear that the grave contains more than one victim. The bodies hint at unimaginable horror, bearing the markings of bullet holes and animal traps.
Forced to work alongside Detective Travis, with whom she shares a troubled past, Kim begins to uncover a dark secretive relationship between the families who own the land in which the bodies were found.
But while Kim is immersed in one of the most complicated investigations she’s ever led, her team are caught up in a spate of sickening hate crimes. Kim is close to revealing the truth behind the murders, yet soon finds one of her own is in jeopardy – and the clock is ticking. Can she solve the case and save them from grave danger – before it’s too late?
An addictive, sinister crime thriller that will have readers on the edge of their seat.

About the author

Angela Marsons is the Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author of the DI Kim Stone series and her books have sold more than 5 million in 7 years.
She lives in Worcestershire with her partner and their 2 cheeky Golden Retrievers.
She first discovered her love of writing at Junior School when actual lessons came second to watching other people and quietly making up her own stories about them. Her report card invariably read "Angela would do well if she minded her own business as well as she minds other people's".
After years of writing relationship based stories (The Forgotten Woman and Dear Mother) Angela turned to Crime, fictionally speaking of course, and developed a character that refused to go away.
She is signed to Bookouture.com for a total of 28 books in the Kim Stone series and her books have been translated into more than 27 languages.
Many of her books, including Blood Lines, Dead Souls, Broken Bones, Fatal Promise and Dead Memories reached the #1 spot on Amazon on pre-orders alone and the translation of Dead Souls, La Verita Sepolte, recently won the prestigious Primo Bancarella award.

This is no exception. This time Kim is split from her team and is working with an old acquaintance on a joint investigation as the location of a crime scene falls on the boundary between both forces. Her own team has their own investigation to run. As it happens, both investigations end up connecting.
In the meantime, Stacy is intent to do her own investigating and quickly realises that it wasn't a good idea. The storyline is quite harrowing dealing with quite vicious hate crimes where actions back up the usual online trolling.
I love the characters in this series. Their human side and flaws are there for you to see and relate to, and they just seem so real and normal. This was a terrific read and I'll make a start on the next one soon. I am tending to drag these out and read other books in between as I don't want to get to the end of the series and have a long wait for the next one.
'Dead Souls' is a great story for a number of reasons. Firstly, the story has three different story-lines, or threads, which may or may not be related. Secondly, due to circumstances beyond her control, DI Kim Stone is seconded to a different police team to work on a case involving the discovery of some old human remains that have been discovered in a field. Meanwhile other members of her own team, Bryant and Dawson, are investigating an assault that could be an attempted murder while Stacey gets involved in a suicide case. This makes Dead Souls refreshingly different from the earlier novels as we get to learn more about the personalities and background story of these 'supporting' characters while at the same time seeing if Kim can cope without them. Thirdly, just like the other novels in the series, there is plenty of twists and turns in the plot and some quite dramatic 'action' scenes that may make you wince on occasion but will certainly keep you turning the pages.
However, as hate crimes are the main focus of this story, some passages can be slightly uncomfortable to read. So if this is a subject that you find distasteful then you may find this novel slightly upsetting in places. But if you enjoy crime thrillers that have realistic characters and a relatively complex plot that is brimming with menace and 'atmosphere', then I think you will enjoy reading 'Dead Souls' (provided the subject matter doesn't put you off).
So, her team are left on the outside, with Bryant in charge looking into the beating of a Polish man. But what seemed a straightforward case soon becomes more when the guys unearth horrifying threats and a string of other cases involving minority groups.
And honestly, I was completely hooked by a tightly plotted, disturbing and thought provoking storyline and I loved getting to see Kim work without Bryant to reign her in and the rest of the team adapt to working without Kim.
Would happily recommend.
The plot was so far-fetched as to be fantasy, and Stacey behaved more like one of the Famous Five than a police officer.
