Every manual one I have owned thus far seems to be so stiff that you need a pair of pliers just to turn the damn thing. They would rarely grip the side correctly and even when they do and you manage to get to the end of the rotation, the lid would land firmly in the contents along with any shards of metal that the blade decided to sheer off along the way.
But of course, you don't have that problem with this one! It grips the tin perfectly and rotates with little torque. It catches the lid at the end so you don't have to fish it out later and it has the advantage of removing the 'lip' of the tin along with the lid so that you have a perfect open cylinder which makes it even easier to empty the contents. I cannot comment on the robustness yet as I have only had it a short period of time, but if it fails I will update my review accordingly. But, so far so good!
I bought this to replace a 20 year old JL MagiCan opener which was starting to slip on the rims of cans, but has still never failed to open any can I've tried it on.
The very first can I tried this Culinare model on was a Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney Pie. The opener gripped the rim well but the handle was painfully hard to turn for me (I have carpal tunnel syndrome). Despite that I was able to correctly operate the opener which completely failed to open the tin: all it did was to push the metal below the rim inwards. After trying all kinds of techniques with this opener for about 15 minutes with no success, I went outside and fished my old opener from the bottom of the recycling bin. Despite the now very chewed up rim which now also had loads of tiny sharp slivers of metal, the old opener managed the job within two minutes and started cutting the as soon as it was applied.
I set the opener aside with the intention of returning it for a refund, but when I got home found my wife swearing at the damned thing. She found exactly the same problem when she tried the new opener on a very lightweight tin of mackerel fillets after the pull-tab on top of the can had snapped off. My wife was so angry with it that she ended up damaging it so the return option was no longer available.
So with a 100% failure rate, it's the first CAN'T OPENER I've ever owned...
This chunk of junk is a total waste of money and nowhere near as good as the JL version it is descended from.
For a start it was very reasonably priced. Also it isn’t anywhere near as bulky as my old one so take up less room in the crowded kitchen drawer. I’ve always had the type of opener before that you use vertically and it cuts out the centre of the top disc but I thought this one that you use horizontally looked interesting.
First time to use it, it took me a couple of tries to position it right but once I’d worked that out, it was easy peasy. You don’t have to put a lot of force into trimming the rotating handle and it just flooded its way round the top of the can.
It’s obviously got a little magnet built in because when the lid’s cut off, it clings to the opener so you just lift it off. The cut around the top is clean and, being underneath the corner seam, you don’t have the fat edge of the seam in the way, so is much easier to get your spatula and remove the contents.
Very satisfied.
It doesn't grip. The teeth just slide around in the can, and so you have to release it (which is not easy) and try another area. Then it might grip for a few turns and stop again, then you have to move it to another place and try again, etc.
And you end up with a can that's half opened in a lot of places, with stuff spilling out everywhere.
I don't know if it's just my unit that's faulty, or if it's these types of openers that are crap, or if it's just this brand using cheap soft metal or something.
Literally all the old style tin openers that I've used in the last 40 years are better than this.
The new model has changed slightly but still very similar to a design that lasted me years of very easy can opening. This new model feels as sturdy as the old so I expect to get many years out of this product also.
