For fans of Call The Midwife!
A fresh start…
Midwife Ella Mehenick left the small Cornish town of Port Agnes for London and never looked back. But when her seemingly perfect life crashes down around her, there’s only one place she can heal her battered heart - the place she once called home.
A new arrival…
Ella is quickly welcomed into the small community midwife team and loves her new job caring for mums and their precious babies – it’s what she does best! But being back also means facing ex-flame Dan Ferguson…the first man to break her heart.
A second chance at love?
Dan is still as gorgeous as ever, but he’s never forgiven Ella for leaving. And now she’s back it’s clear that there is unfinished business between them. As Ella settles into her new/old life, she can’t stop the memories of how she once loved Dan so completely – and maybe never stopped.
Maybe coming home to Cornwall is Ella's chance to love again…
Meet The Cornish Midwives of Port Agnes- where community, friendship and love are always delivered.

From the Publisher

Hello and Welcome!
Thanks so much for looking at my books on Amazon. I write warm-hearted and uplifting stories of friendship, family, community, and love.
My stories are set in two locations, on the beautiful Cornish Atlantic Coast and in Kent’s Garden of England. It’s that sense of community that makes these settings so perfect for my novels.
Friendships, and particularly women supporting other women, are integral to my stories, be they midwives, business owners, or mums who meet at the school gates to share the highs and lows of life. There’s always a rollercoaster ride but, no matter what, there’ll also be a guaranteed happy ending to put a smile on your face by the time you reach that final page.
The readers who’ve chosen my books have made all of my writing dreams come true. I really hope you’ll decide to join them, take a break and enjoy getting lost in a feel-good story, with characters who’ll soon feel like old friends.
Thanks again for stopping by, Jo xx

About the author

I was born a stone’s throw from the English Channel and I still live near the sea in Kent, with my own family – so close to the South Eastern edge of England that we’re very nearly French - and it's probably why so many of my books are set near the sea too. I’ve made up stories for as long as I can remember, but never really took it any further. Concentrating on my career and family, writing went on the back burner until a catalyst called cancer gave me a major kick up the proverbial. I decided I was going to write that novel after all.
Since having my debut novel published in 2015, things have happened quite quickly and I have recently released my twentieth novel. I’ve been able to fulfil a childhood dream of walking into WHSmiths and buying a book with my name on it and I still find it almost impossible to believe that my books have been bestsellers on Amazon too. I write contemporary women’s fiction, with a focus on love, friendship, family and community, when I’m not knee deep in assignments at the university where I still teach part-time. My first three novels in The Cornish Midwife series from Boldwood Books - 'The Cornish Midwife', 'A Summer Wedding for the Cornish Midwife' and 'A Winter's Wish for the Cornish Midwife' are all available from Amazon, and have been in either the Top 10 or Top 100 bestseller list. The fourth book in the series 'A Spring Surprise for the Cornish Midwife' is now available for pre-order. 'A Cornish Summer's Kiss' and 'Second Chances at Cherry Tree Cottage' from Boldwood Books are also available on Amazon and I hope to be able to share news of future books soon.
My ambition to drink tea and make stuff up on a full-time basis is ever closer and if you follow me on Twitter, Instagram or my author page on Facebook, I might even say something interesting one of these days… although I wouldn’t hold your breath!

Following a major personal embarrassment that went viral on social media, Ella returns to her home town of Port Agnes in beautiful Cornwall to take up a position as a midwife at the local unit. She is soon making her rounds, getting to know the expectant mothers in the Port Agnes area, sharing in their joys and fears and becoming part of their lives at one of the most important times they will ever experience.
Not all the mums-to-be are having an easy time. With phobias and unexpected pregnancies, some of them need Ella's help more than others. Then there's Tara, whose husband seems to be the most selfish and uncaring of fathers-to-be. When Ella spots him in a compromising situation in a local pub, her opinion of him sinks even lower. But is there more to Dan than she realises?
The Cornish countryside and the rural community comes alive in this novel. A sense of place is always important to me, and I could quite picture myself on the Cornish coast, eating pasties and listening to the cry of the gulls, as I read.
There's a strong cast of supporting characters and I'm sure many of them will feature in future books in this series. There's plenty of scope for more stories, as the midwives not only go about their work, but deal with all the twists and turns in their private lives, too.
Jo Bartlett is a lovely writer, and I always know I'm guaranteed a good read when I pick up one of her books. I'm looking forward to the next instalment in this delightful new series and can't wait for my next trip to Cornwall!
And, it felt like it was set in the 1950s , albeit updated with mobile phones and internet infuencers.
It felt like an unsuccessful attempt at Call The Midwife, Cornish version. Cliched, repetitive and the heroine is nauseatingly nice, to everyone. There was no tension, the outcomes were screamingly apparent from the beginning. I am sorry I wasted time and money on this. Another author for the never again list.
Read as friendships and relationships blossom and enjoy a few hours down in Cornwall.
Looking forward to the next book in the series!
o give a tad of credibility.
But life back home in lovely Port Agnes was never going to be straightforward for Ella. When she had a brush with fame on the fated day of her wedding, she couldn’t have foretold how far-reaching its effect would be. As Ella’s life eases back on track, helped by her busy job as a midwife and all the hard work and emotion it involves, and cheered on by her mum and dad and friends, old and new, she begins to see how love could once again be a part of that life. But not everyone wishes Ella well, and it isn’t only a pregnant woman who is in danger. Jo Bartlett is known for her stylish brand of story-telling, and this book is another gem. I raced through to the end, wanting to know how all the story threads worked out. Can’t wait for the next Cornish Midwives book!
